Cabbagetown gardens
Beautiful plants and imaginative layouts are everywhere. This one is a really playful display and it’s getting bigger. Spring is our garden season.
Update - Whiskey Jack
Duncan Fremlin and his pals in Whiskey Jack are hitting the road next week. This show is called “CBC TV Country Music Stars”. Along with Whiskey Jack, it features Donna Ramsay and Leroy Anderson - all alumnae from the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show. On Sunday, they’re playing in Nobel. On Wednesday, they’re in Sault Ste Marie. On Friday, they’re back in Toronto at Free Times Cafe (320 College) and they finish the week in Peterborough. Have fun - safe trip everyone.
Danny Marks
Danny is busy this week as well. On Tuesday afternoon, he was in Barrie and then from 11 pm on Ja Fm 91. He’ll be at the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival on Friday. Saturday night it’s BLUZ FM on Jazz Fm 91. And then on Sunday, Danny’s season finale at the Smoke Show (Mt Pleasant) happens from 3 pm.
Musicians wanted
The Cabbagetown BIA and the organizers at Amelia’s Garden are both looking for local musicians who want to perform outdoors during the coming summer months. If you’re interested, you can email the BIA here and the Garden here.
Opportunities in The Distillery

Early info
Beth Kaplan’s annual “Write in the garden” workshop is taking registrations. It’s a one day writing adventure. She’s taught memoir writing for three decades at two Toronto universities. You’ll write in her hidden garden and compare notes with others. Lunch is included. She says, “Write in the garden and enjoy positive feedback, bushy perennials, and lunch.” Sunday July 20, 10 am to 5 pm. $225. Farmers’ markets
At the Cabbagetown Farmers Market (Winchester and Sumach), there’ll be lots of fresh produce, artisanal products, prepared food, beer and wine, and more. Tuesday, 3 to 7 pm, Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach).

Free fitness classes
Organizers at Amelia’s Garden (Amelia and Parliament) are launching a weekly fitness class for seniors. It starts on Friday June 6 at 10 am. Boost your flexibility, balance and strength. Bring your yoga mat if available. Jonathan is a certified trainer and Silver Fox. Free.
Yoga mornings at Soulpepper
Every Friday morning in the Spring to June 27, Soulpepper (50 Tank House Lane) is offering free yoga classes to wake your body, breath and senses. 9 to 10 am. Click here for more info and to register.

Bev Jenkins solo show
Bev’s art - sculpted oils on canvass - will be shown from May 23 to June 21 at the Arts & Letters Club (14 Elm). She focuses on nature with its strengths of light, vivid colour and texture. Music in the Park
Student musicians from the Taylor Academy at the Royal Conservatory will perform in Corktown Common (155 Bayview) on Saturday May 31 from 2 pm. Free.
Enoch Turner Schoolhouse annual meeting
The Enoch Turner AGM happens on June 3 from 6 pm in the Schoolhouse (106 Trinity). David A Wilson will then give a talk on the Fenian Raiders and their plans to liberate Ireland by applying military pressure on Canada.
Dixon Hall’s Walk & Roll
Enjoy a day of exercise and fun in support of Dixon Hall’s programs for seniors. You can walk, run or roll 1k, 2k or 5k and while you’re doing it, you can raise funds and donate. Rivers, cabbages & doctors - walking tour
Find out how early immigration, public health facilities and the Riverdale Zoo all contributed to our modern community. Sunday June 8, 11 am. The Cabbagetown Preservation Association along with Heritage Toronto is organizing this walk. Starting point is Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach). Registration at Heritage Toronto is required to save a space for you. $8 plus $1.85.
Alumnae Theatre book launch
Robin Whittaker has written about the 100 year history of Alumnae Theatre (70 Berkeley). On Monday June 9 at 7:30 pm, there’ll be a book launch - Mr Whittaker will read excerpts and share new stories along with building tours, refreshments and a cash bar. 51 Division open house
