Cabbagetown South Christmas party
Cabbagetown South Residents Association is holding its annual Christmas party at Retsina (209 Gerrard E) next Wednesday, December 4 at 7 pm.   It’s a great opportunity to enjoy a drink, to schmooze with friends and to win prizes donated by local businesses.  Retsina is providing good food and there’s a cash bar.  $20 – at the door or online here.

Corktown Christmas Party
Join the Corktown Residents & Business Association on Saturday December 7 (starting at 6 pm for reserved seating) for the annual Christmas dinner and concert at the Dominion on Queen (500 Queen E).  Dinner includes turkey with all the trimmings, $14.95 for adults and $7.50 for kids.  There’s a separate room with movies and games for the kids.  A special concert will be performed by the Corktown Chamber Orchestra. Door prizes and a live auction.  Reserve your priority seating now, call the Dominion on Queen at (416) 368-6893 or email info@dominiononqueen.com

Caroling on Sackville and Winchester
For over twenty years, an informal group of friends has gathered around Winchester Street and strolled through the neighbourhood to sing carols at local homes.  This year, the choir is covering Sackville and Winchester on Sunday December 8 from 6:30 to 8 pm.  As they go, they ask for donations for the Food Bank at St Luke’s United Church (Sherbourne and Carlton).  Last year, they collected over 700 pounds of food and $600 in cash.  The event started in 1991 as part of CBC Radio’s annual food drive (when they were located on Parliament Street).  It’s a fine project and a fun evening – congrats to everyone involved.

Social Monkey Club
Natasha Geddes is starting a special initiative where parents and their kids can spend time together in a whimsical environment.  The first event on December 15 (at three different times – 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm) is Santa’s Gingerbread Workshop.  Kids will enjoy decorating a gingerbread house, posing for a picture with Santa, dancing and singing with Sonshine & Broccoli and munching down milk and cookies. It happens at The Fifth Social Club (225 Richmond W).  Tickets are $45/child and $20/parent and are available here.

CRA survey
The Cabbagetown Residents Association is encouraging Don Vale residents to read and respond to their new survey.  It’s been designed to be answered quickly and to give the group insights into your sense of the quality of life in our neighbourhood.  To encourage responses, there’ll be a lucky draw for a $50 gift certificate at Hey Lucy (229 Carlton).  The survey closes on Friday December 6. You’ll find it here.

CPA meeting
Helen Coltrinari, Bob Cumming & Dave Pretlove.  Bob represented Anne but didn't claim to do the gardening.
At its meeting last Monday, the Cabbagetown Preservation Association presented its annual “Streetscape in Bloom” prize to Anne Cumming at 403 Sackville for her “garden of merit”.  She receives an original watercolour painting and a glass medallion for her achievement.  The 2013 Peggy Kurtin Award for excellence in restoration was given to DACHI for their exterior restoration work.  The meeting highlighted a fascinating talk by Virginia Van Vliet on Victorian mourning rituals.
Sheila Schirmer & Patricia Marson-Vaughan from DACHI
The CPA quietly does a great deal of work to benefit our community.  Members organize the autumn tour of homes, the spring garden tours, the Hallowe’en ghost walks, the Cabbagetown People project and these annual community awards.  The CPA’s newspaper is distributed widely through the community four times a year.  Their work was recognized this year with two major awards from Heritage Toronto.
Membership is only $20.  Contact cpa@cabbagetownpa.ca to join.

Superscript Graphic Design & Marketing
Karen Thompson designed the lively posters and logo for this year’s Forsythia Festival.  Her material stood out for its fresh, attractive designs and underlined the new approach that organizers were taking to the event.  She’s a Cabbagetown-based freelance graphic designer and she works primarily for small to medium-sized businesses and organizations. She does logos, brochures, promotion and marketing materials and posters and she’s also interested in website designs.  To see her website, click here.

By-election results
Photo: Sean Kirkpatrick, Toronto Star
By now, we’re all aware that Chrystia Freeland is on her way to Ottawa to represent our riding, continuing a twenty year Liberal winning streak.  She’ll do a good job, both for us and for the country. We’ll keep you informed when she sets up her local office.
As mentioned here earlier, we were very fortunate with the high calibre of candidates representing all of the parties.  We owe all of them our thanks for their ideas and energy during the campaign.
On a sad note, Elections Canada is reporting that only 38% of the eligible voters bothered to cast a ballot.

CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD REVIEW

This week’s image – Election debate:  John Tory, moderator (left), Geoff Pollock (Conservative), Linda McQuaig (NDP), Chrystia Freeland (Liberal) & John Deverell (Green)

POLITICAL STUFF

Toronto Centre federal by-election
Voting happens on Monday, November 25, 9:30 am to 9:30 pm

By-election politics and gossip
As the by-election campaign heats up, we’re getting lots of attention from the various political stars.  On Tuesday, Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland enjoyed a pleasant lunch at the House on Parliament  (454 Parliament).  No word about the menu.  On Saturday, Linda McQuaig will have a gathering at Jet Fuel (519 Parliament) from 10 to 11 am and everyone is welcome.  Green Party candidate John Deverell has plunked his office down right at 555 Parliament Street so he can keep close track of our reactions.  And Conservative candidate Geoff Pollock has recruited Norm Betts from his sick bed after his flying stunt at the rodeo to help with his canvass.

Let’s clear up the confusion
For Wellesley Street voters, confusion may arise over the role that Stuart Marwick is playing in this election.  He’s not a candidate nor even a political party.  He’s just reminiscing about his past glories as a Grey County stalwart for Mel Hurtig’s National Party.

Voting info
If you’re worried that your name isn’t properly registered, you can register at the polling station.  To see how the system works, go here and then click on Toronto Centre. You can also see where you vote and what identification is needed.

CITY HALL

Pam McConnell is recovering
Photo:  Reuters
As we all know by now, Pam was bowled over (but not impressed) by Rob Ford during Monday’s emotional City Council debate.  The incident became part of the world-wide tsunami of media commentary about Mr Ford. This photo, for example, shows her right after the collision. It appeared in The Press-News of Southeastern Stark County, Ohio.  It’s a hard way, Pam, to become an international media star.

Gonna be a tough job, George
Photo: Andrew Wallace, Toronto Star
Prominent Cabbagetown lawyer, George Rust D’Eye, has taken on the huge task of representing Mayor Rob Ford during his tribulations at City Hall.  George has had a distinguished legal career. He’s been described as the “dean” of municipal law by the Toronto Star.  Certainly his arrival on the scene made a difference in the debates. He suddenly had the councillors and the media talking about injunctions, lawsuits and the limits of City Council’s powers over the mayor.  Hiring George is undoubtedly one of the few rational moves by the mayor during this whole circus. You can read the Star’s story about George here.

NORMAL NEWS

Eric Murphy has a new book
Be sure to get to Chapters ASAP for a copy of Eric’s new children’s story, The Phantom’s Gold.  Eric held his book launch at the Arts & Letters Club on Wednesday and the book is flying off the shelves everywhere now.  It’s listed on the Chapters’ website for $11.19 and there’s a Kobo edition at $8.99.  You can read a synopsis about it on his website. He also reports that Daniels Corporation is spearheading a literacy drive in Regent Park in 2014 and The Phantom’s Gold will be part of it. Congrats Eric and best wishes for your follow-up project.

Good work, Gary
We mentioned last week that Gary Smith had a very successful trip to Paris last month.  He went there to compete in the 2013 Carrousel International Art Exhibition at The Louvre and he came home with two gold medals, one for Best Figure Drawing and the second for Best Pastel.  He’s got some neat pictures and more details on his website. Nice work, Gary.

Cabbagetown South Christmas Party
It happens on Wednesday December 4 from 7 to 9 pm at Retsina Restaurant (209 Gerrard E).  There’ll be plenty of gossip and prizes.  You’ve only got a few more days to save on Advance Ticket prices ($15) – to Wednesday November 27.  After that, regular prices are $20.  Cash bar.  Click here for details and ticket purchases.

Christmas is only 34 days away
And counting.  If you’d like to give a gift that will please your pals and do some good as well, then here’s your chance.  Number 9 Studio (222 Gerrard at Seaton) has put together this CD with great holiday tunes featuring some of Canada’s finest artists.  Proceeds from the sale go to the Children’s Wish Foundation.  These are cool stocking stuffers, nifty corporate gifts and good things to have around for yourself.  Drop in at the Studio or go to the website for more info and easy ordering.

Fire Works at Alumnae Theatre
Fire Works is a series of full-length plays, workshops and panel discussions.  Three plays are being staged to December 1 – Measure of the World by Shirley Barrie, Gloria’s Guy by Joan Burrows and Theory by Norman Yeung.  There’ll be round tables about each play on Sundays at noon and the Playwrights Speak on Sunday December 1 at 4 pm.  For tickets, descriptions and schedules, click here.  Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley (at Adelaide).
