LOCAL NEWS

Merryberry’s cooking classes
Every couple of weeks, Cyril at Merryberry (529 Parliament) holds a two-hour cooking class.  At the end of the session, everyone sits down and eats what they’ve produced.  This week’s event featured recipes for burgers “from another planet”.   Watch here for announcements about future classes.  You can sign up at Merryberry or phone Cyril at (647) 348-0411.  $45.

Congrats to Christopher House
Photo: Toronto Dance Theatre
Christopher House, the Artistic Director at Toronto Dance Theatre (80 Winchester), has just been named as a Member in the Order of Canada.  His official citation notes that his award comes “For his contributions to Canadian dance as an innovative choreographer, dancer and director.”

And to Cathy Crowe
Cathy Crowe has also been named to the Order of Canada.  She has long called herself a street nurse and she’s a tireless activist on behalf of people living in poverty.  In 2010, she ran in Toronto Centre riding in a provincial by-election, making affordable housing a centrepiece in her campaign.

The Lower Don bike trail
Photo: City of Toronto
The trail has been closed for over a year as repairs are made at various points from Pottery Road to the Riverdale Park bridge.  The City of Toronto posted a blog in late June promising that the trail would reopen by the end of July.  On the contrary, since that time, work appears to have stopped completely.  Flooding, unexpected discoveries of underground cables, delays with Metrolinx permits - all these issues are being tossed around as reasons for the late completion.  It’s now obvious that the August 1 deadline simply won’t happen.
The City’s blog also has a comments section where you can read the frustrations of trail users who believe that the work has been mismanaged and the explanations are merely fog to cover incompetence.  Click here.

Get ready for the Festival
This year’s Cabbagetown Festival kicks off on Parliament Street on Saturday September 9 and Sunday September 10.  The Cabbagetown BIA (237 Carlton) has a warm-up special.  Buy two Tees and get a free tote bag with them.  Check them out at the BIA office or call (416) 921-0857.
And when you’ve got one, take it with you on your holiday trip.  Snap a selfie (or a regular pic) and send it here.  Your picture will be proudly posted on the World Wide Web.  cabbagetownreview@gmail.com

Volunteers needed for the Cabbagetown Festival
Captains for Blair’s Run
Blair’s Run happens on Sunday September 10 during the Cabbagetown Festival. The group needs street captains to recruit other volunteers, organize pamphlet deliveries, supervise fundraising and encourage local runners to sign up for the Run.  Ideally, there’ll be a captain and a team for every street in Cabbagetown.  It’s a fun job and a very satisfying way to support the Cabbagetown Youth Centre.
Brenda McNee, Marilyn Marshall and Sandy Riches are putting together the 2017 teams and they need your help.
Email Brenda and offer your help.   cycbrenda@bell.net
BIA volunteers
These volunteers work on a lot of jobs during the street festival on September 9 and 10.  It’s a great way to experience the event from the inside.  Call Stephen at (416) 921-0857.

Survey on short-term rentals
The City of Toronto has set up an online survey to receive opinions about short-term rentals like Airbnb.  It’s part of the consultation process as the City works out new rules to regulate these rentals.  The survey is open until August 18.  Click here to find out more and to do it.

Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum Historical Tidbit
Cemeteries are living memorials for the dead. On May 17 1882, Albert Jackson showed up for his first day of work as a Toronto postal carrier. He was met with hostility and derision. Why? Because he was black. He had fled slavery as a child with his heroic mother, Anne Maria, and six siblings in 1858 and grown up in Toronto’s Ward district. Controversy raged in Toronto newspapers and the black community until a delegation met with Prime Minister Sir John A Macdonald on May 30th. It was an election year. Macdonald intervened. And Albert was delivering letters two days later. Now Albert’s descendants visit family plots in the Necropolis to celebrate Albert and their family’s close connection. This year, three generations of Jacksons gathered around the marker of Ernest Bruce Jackson.

GO FOR IT

A Gold Medal
Canada’s women’s-eight U23 rowing team are world champions.  In the finals on Sunday morning, they rowed to their Gold Medal by beating the second-place Americans by almost seven seconds.  In the earlier preliminary rounds, the team got into the finals by setting a new world record.
Cabbagetown’s Sydney Payne is a member of the team.  Her mom, Kelly Rogers, is as proud as possible - she says it’s “unbelievable, still can’t believe it…”  .
Congrats everyone!

Grace in northern Ontario
Grace McNee is continuing her amazing project - she’s doing a solo cycle from coast to coast to raise money for Independent Living Nova Scotia in honour of her friend Sarah Dube.
She’s now into northern Ontario, camping in Upsala west of Lake Superior.  She had her picture taken picking blueberries in Sioux Lookout.  On her blog, she describes her experiences in northern Saskatchewan while discovering its countryside, its handy liquor laws and the Ness Lake music festival. Click here to read it.
We can all help her with our donations.  She’s increased her target to $10,000.  52 people have given $5,725 so far.  She’s handling her fundraising through Canada Helps.

Video tour: a world of design at your doorstep
Kendall has been operating his interior design business in Cabbagetown since 1998. Together with Kevin, they expanded with an award-winning retail shop eight years ago.
They still find Cabbagetowners who are unfamiliar with Kendall & Co and what they offer. So, they created a video tour to show how it’s grown into Toronto’s One-Stop-Shop for everything you desire for your home:
While having a look online, please subscribe to Kendall’s YouTube channel for more informative videos in the future.
Like other Cabbagetown proprietors, Kendall and Kevin are also local residents making a difference to the present and future of our community. Kendall & Co (514 Parliament) has all the reasons to shop local at Parliament/Winchester.  Store hours:  Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm.

Unistar
Unistar (555 Parliament) has settled nicely into its new home just north of Winchester.  Computer owners know that they can rely on Unistar’s services - when they need to rescue data or buy new equipment or get some friendly advice on a sticky problem.  This part of Parliament Street now has several nifty businesses and Unistar will fit right into the scene.
