NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

Free listing for your yard sales
Photo: Natasha Fatah
Are you having a yard sale soon?  Collecting all your good stuff?  Perhaps joining with your neighbours?  If so, include a listing on the Review as part of your publicity. It’s free.

What you need to do:
Send us your full name (we’ll only use your first name), address for the sale, dates and times, phone number (we won’t list this on the listing) and a brief sentence about your treasures.  Our deadline every week is Wednesday at 6 pm.  We’ll organize the listings by date and by street names.  Email us at cabbagetownreview@gmail.com

Here’s a sample:
Doug’s sale, 555 Wellesley St E, Saturday July 6, 7 am to 5 pm.  The best ever selection of garden furniture along with assorted household goods that he’s saved up over the past fifty years!

Make a donation
If you’re having a sale, please consider donating some of your proceeds to the Children’s Book Bank.  It’s a registered charity that collects gently used children’s books and donates them free to children from low-income families who may otherwise never have a chance to own and read a personal library.  The Book Bank is located at 350 Berkeley St on the corner at Gerrard.  It has a great website.

Our older trees
The storms that happened here this summer have severely damaged or blown over many of our older trees.  Suddenly, we have a lot of open, bare spaces in the neighbourhood.  The Cabbagetown Residents Association has taken an active interest in tree replacement and they regularly publish a lot of good information for homeowners.  You can read their latest comment on their website.
The City of Toronto will maintain or remove damaged trees located on the street allowance in front of your house.  If you’re concerned about a tree, call 311 to start the process.  If the tree is on your private property, LEAF, a non-profit agency, will give you advice and a low-cost replacement.  Click here to contact them.

Diary of a tree removal.
Early this week, an inspector from the City of Toronto knocked on our door to tell us that our apple tree had become a hazard and had to be removed.  He was well-informed, polite and firm.  We’ve made arrangements with him to take it down and to plant a new one.
You’ll be able to follow our experiences with the City step-by-step in our gardening section, Barbara’s Garden.  For the first installment, click here.

Progress report about the big mural
Work on the mural on the side of 200 Wellesley Street is progressing very quickly. Called The Phoenix, it celebrates the renewal of the building following the extensive fire that happened there four years ago.  Ryan Dineen and his partners at Toronto Muralists are doing the actual painting.  He’s well-known for his work in Cabbagetown.  He painted the whimsical mural at Carlton and Parliament and he’s done others at Number 9 Studios on Gerrard at Ontario, at Chew Chews on Carlton Street and at Double Take on Gerrard.  When finished, the Phoenix will rise 250’ above Wellesley Street and it’ll be the tallest mural in the city.  And it’ll give the St James Town landscape a great new landmark.

Goodbye Summer in Regent Park
The Outdoor Arts Program at the Daniels Spectrum has lined up a great weekend for kids and families on Thursday August 22, Friday August 23 and Saturday August 24. On Thursday, there’ll be a Dance Party for high school students in the Daniels courtyard from 6 to 9 pm with a DJ, dance floor, great music and games.  From 9 am to 2 pm on Friday, boys and girls (middle school ages) can join the soccer field day at Nelson Mandela Park School (445 Shuter).  There’ll be free food, games for players at all skill levels, and awards.  On Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm, the Family Carnival happens on Regent Park boulevard next to the Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas E) with free food, carnival games and prizes.  For more info, click here.

Under the Stars
Enjoy an outdoor screening in the MDC courtyard beside the Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas E).  The movie, Elijah, follows Elijah Harper through twenty days leading to his opposition to the Meech Lake Accord and his decision to block its passage because of its failure to help Aboriginal people.  Bill Merasty who stars in the film will be there and will be part of the Q&A after the screening. No cover charge.  Friday August 23, 9 pm.  Click here for more info.

Cabbagetown South street party
Music, barbeque, yummies and popcorn.  Games for kids of all ages.  Art exhibits and sales.  It all happens on Sunday September 15 from noon to 6 pm at Central Neighbourhood House (349 Ontario).  If it rains, everyone will move inside. There’s still room on the schedule for musicians and performers – if you’re interested, contact Jennifer at jennylouwalker@gmail.com.

The 35th Annual Tour of Homes
Save this date:  Sunday September 15, noon to 4 pm.  The Tour of Homes is always one of Cabbagetown’s main events.  Hundreds of people tour through half-a-dozen homes.  Tickets cost $30 and the income is used by the Cabbagetown Preservation Association to fund its community programs. For more information and for Paypal ticket purchases, click here. Tickets will also be available at retailers in Cabbagetown later this month.

The Art of the Sizzle
The Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre has a terrific evening lined up for Wednesday September 25.  The Art of the Sizzle is a tribute roast to Bob Rae and a fundraising benefit for the CCAC.  Featured guests include TVO’s Steve Paikin, the Royal Canadian Air Farce, John Tory, Glen Murray and more.  The evening includes dinner, wine and the comedy roast.  It all happens in the north building at the St Lawrence Market.  Tickets are $199 and tax receipts are provided.  There`s more info and tickets here.

Alumnae Theatre
Photo: Ginette Mohr
The Alumnae Theatre’s opening production for the Fall season is a bawdy presentation of The Underpants – an adaptation of a 1910 German farce.  “In this farcical send-up of bourgeois snobbery and conformity, a housewife becomes an instant celebrity after she accidently loses her underpants in public.”  Opening night is Friday, September 20 and the play runs until Saturday October 5.  $20 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and pay what you can on Sunday at 2 pm.  70 Berkeley Street.

Anastasia Watson at Sundara Yoga
Do you believe in the healing power of words?  Or that metaphors can be medicine to the stories living in the “meat and bones” of our bodies, our breath and our hearts.  Anastasia does.  Her classes offer safe places where you can uncover, breathe into and celebrate the stories beneath your skin.  Check out one of her classes on Sundays, Tuesday and Thursdays and learn more here.  Sundara Yoga, 492 Parliament (side door).

Sarah Cook has a line of jackets for your little girl and they’re on sale until October 1.  Her products are redesigned jean jackets and faux fur – they’re environmentally sustainable, super cute, durable and fashionable.
