Grace on a bike
Photo: Grace at Blue Heron Farm on Cape Breton Island
Grace is now in Newfoundland and finishing her cross-Canada bike tour.  Her trip has taken a reverse jog.  Instead of going to the western coast of Newfoundland from Cape Breton, she took the ferry to Argentia south of St John’s.  She explored the city and now she’s westward bound to Port aux Basque.  When she gets there, she’ll again take the ferry back to Nova Scotia for her finishing celebrations in Halifax on October 17.
Her friends and supporters are still making donations.  104 people have given $9,836 toward her $10,000 goal.  Her deadline is October 30.
We can all help her with our donations.  She’s handling her fundraising through Canada Helps.

Volunteers urgently needed by Dixon Hall

Please call (416) 863-0499 ext 3225 or email volunteer@dixonhall.org

Give thanks, with love
Together with the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s pastry team, the Sherbourne Health Centre is holding its second annual fundraiser to support its LGBTQ youth program. This year, they’re selling pecan, pumpkin and apple pies at $20 each with all of the income going directly to the Centre’s Monday night drop-in dinners.  Please note - a nut-free pie is also available.
Order your pie online before Wednesday October 4 here.
Then pick-up your pie on Friday October 6 at the Sherbourne Health Centre (333 Sherbourne) from 11 am to 6 pm or the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (255 Front St) from 11 am to 2 pm.
If you don’t order online, drop in to the pick-up locations on October 6 and buy one on the spot.

In memory of Nancy White
Nancy White died recently from the lingering effects of a stroke she suffered several years ago.  She loved Cabbagetown - she lived at 340 Carlton for twenty years from 1985 to 2004.  She was an active volunteer with Friends of Riverdale Farm. She went to step class with Brenda McNee who remembers her glorious front garden and her strong opinions.  She liked to sit in the window at Jet Fuel and to shop at Daniel et Daniel, Terry’s butcher shop, Epicure and Neat Stuff.   Her niece, Liz Kingstone, lives on Wellesley Street with her husband Steve Brearton and sons Henry, Simon and Sidney.  There will be a celebration of her life on the roof of the Merchandise Building Lofts (155 Dalhousie) at 5 pm on Saturday November 4.

The Farm proudly presents four new Tamworth piglets, just over two months old.  Open 9 am to 5 pm daily.  201 Winchester at Sumach

Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum Historical Tidbit
Text by Sally Gibson
“History” may pop up in the most unexpected places.  Take this Sun Crest soda bottle, buried deep inside a stone wall flanking West Riverdale Park washrooms. How did it get there? Although the real reason can’t be known, it’s possible, even likely, that a City worker dropped it, deliberately or otherwise, when the wall was being built in the late 1950s. Sadly, the bottle has recently been shattered … apparently by a person unknown who simply saw a target, not a piece of local history.

Lookin’ good
Tony (left) and John frequently stroll through the Necropolis and Riverdale Park while walking Eddy, John’s dog.  Anita often joins them.  She seems content to endure their political discussions which regularly become increasingly colourful.

UPDATES ABOUT CRIME

Regent Park shooting
Photo: CBC News
Another shooting happened on Saturday September 24. A man was shot near Gerrard and Gifford and taken to hospital with very serious wounds.  He’s recovering after surgery.  CBC News has a report about it - click here.
This is the fifth shooting over the summer. On September 16, Everdone Paul Mitchell died from his wounds. In this case, 51 Division released photos of the suspects and asks for our assistance if we recognize anyone.
Lemard Champagnie died in a shooting on July 2.
Two other men were seriously wounded during separate attacks in late August and early September.
Ali Rizieg was killed at Dundas and Sackville in January.

Cabbagetown Residents Association report
Des Ryan is a CRA Board member tasked with liaison between the Association and police.  In response to these shooting incidents, 51 Division has increased its patrols in the neighbourhood and Toronto Community Housing has sent in more Community Safety officers.  To keep informed about Des’s reports, follow the Association at its website.

More reactions about this guy
He walked into Stout Irish Pub (221 Carlton) on September 15 and had his picture taken on the pub’s security system. He started opening doors and ended up rummaging through the staff washroom. He was also seen poking around behind The Local GEST.
Local residents report that a guy looking much like him has been seen attempting break-ins in the neighbourhood.  Call the police if you think you’ve seen him - emergency calls to 911 or reports to (416) 808-5100.
