IN THE NEWS

Election details
The candidates in this special by-election make up the most intriguing, well-qualified group that we’ve seen in a Toronto Centre campaign for many years.  Voting will happen on Monday November 25. The Toronto Star offered a quick overview of the process and its significance in this article.
Elections Canada is the referee in this election.  You can reach the local office at 1-866-281-5086 or visit it at 86 Parliament St (9 am to 9 pm on Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm Saturday and noon to 4 pm Sunday.)  You can vote in advance polls on Friday November 15, Saturday November 16 and Monday November 18.  You can also vote at the Elections Canada office or by mail but you need to follow specific steps to do so.  Get all of this info at the official website.
If you’re worried that your name isn’t on the voters’ list, call this office or check the website for info about registering.

They’re off and running
The four major parties have all chosen their candidates.

Conservative
Geoff Pollock, 186 Davenport Rd, (416) 920-1919,  http://www.geoffpollock.ca/

Green
Tom Deverell,  555 Parliament St, (416) 920-0707,  http://www.deverell.ca/

Liberal
Chrystia Freeland,  81 King St E, (647) 725-2071,  http://chrystiafreeland.liberal.ca/

NDP
Linda McQuaig, 878 Yonge St, (416) 900-7493,  http://lindamcquaig.ca/

All-candidates meeting

MORE NEWS

First annual pumpkin walk
The Cabbagetown Residents Association is sponsoring a pumpkin walk in Riverdale Park from 5 to 10 pm on Friday November 1.  Bring your pumpkin and a candle so you can add it to the display – more pumpkins mean a bigger better display!  It’s happening in Riverdale Park.  The Daily Bread Food Bank will also be there at the Park gates (Winchester and Sumach) to collect your donations of non-perishable food goods.  Staff from the City of Toronto will collect the pumpkins after the event for disposal.

Save your beer bottles
Cabbagetown South Residents Association is having a bottle drive day on Saturday November 16 at The Beer Store (Gerrard & Seaton).  There’s a handy drop-off window where you can leave your bottles and the funds will be directed to the Association.  $500 was raised in an earlier campaign and the Association earmarked $50 for the school breakfast program at Lord Dufferin, $250 for Central Neighbourhood House (kids’ programs, after school snacks and neighbourhood cleanups) and $150 for its Spring 2014 cleaning and gardening projects.

reLEAF in Cabbagetown
David Grant has started a Facebook page and a website to protect the tree canopy in Cabbagetown and to promote planting native species wherever possible.  He’s highlighting a petition that’s circulating to save the maple at 419 Wellesley from the City’s chainsaws.  Neighbours have worried that it’s being cut down for administrative and budget reasons, not because of some inner disease.  They’re asking for a more thorough examination before its removal.  His website also has info about native species, arborists, landscaping and links to other groups.

Noah Richler’s advice
Photo: Toronto Star Keith Beaty
On Saturday October 26, Noah wrote a thoughtful piece in the Toronto Star about maintaining our parks in the winter so they can be useful and safe.  His advice is well-founded.  Dog walkers, toboggan riders and pedestrians are daily users of Riverdale Park throughout the winter.  A couple of years ago, Central Neighbourhood House held a mid-winter picnic that attracted several hundred people.  The Farm is a year-round draw.  Despite these obvious crowds, the parks department closes the field house, removes trash cans, ignores litter and leaves unsafe icy surfaces on the stairs and sidewalks.  You can read Noah’s article here and if you want to add your voice to his, you can contact Pam McConnell at councillor_mcconnell@toronto.ca.

Best wishes to Gary Smith
Gary`s currently taking part in an international exhibition and competition at the Louvre in Paris.  His painting, “Moored & Waiting ” is on display.  He`s taking part in a life drawing competition sponsored by a Chinese auction house.  The winner will be promoted by the company after the event.  Gary is well known for his two Corktown murals and for his on-going teaching and exhibitions in the neighbourhood.  His most recent show at the Distillery drew over 400 visitors. Check out his website.

Congrats to Kendall & Co
Some very well-deserved praise and awards have been coming to the folks at Kendall & Co (227 Carlton) lately.  They were nominated in two categories for NOW Magazine`s Reader`s Choice poll.  The Toronto Star did a major article about the store.  And now the Cabbagetown BIA has awarded them ”Business Improvement of the Year” and ”Best window arrangements.” Kendall`s website has a good article about the benefits of shopping local and supporting your neighbourhood retailers.

RESTAURANT UPDATES
Lunch buffet at Butter Chicken Factory
This week, the relentlessly hungry restaurant department here at the Review visited Butter Chicken Factory (556 Parliament) for its lunch hour buffet.  It’s a great bargain.  The food is hot and fresh (not gummy and cold like so many buffets) and includes appetizers, condiments, nan and papadom breads, four main entrée dishes and dessert.  All for $9.95.  Well worth the visit – lunch from 11:30 am to 3 pm.  For menu details, click here.

F’Amelia
The new wine bar at F’Amelia Extended (8 Amelia) has been launched and is already getting busy.  It’s open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6 pm to 2 am and it’s a good spot for a stop after work or a quick drink before dinner.  Bookings for private parties have started up – there are plans under way for a boozy afternoon Baptism celebration, a 50th birthday and even (it’s true), a 25th wedding anniversary.
Next door at F’Amelia (12 Amelia), the truffle season is in full stride with truffle specials being featured every night.  It’s also time for really good desserts –- this week, there’s chocolate budino (a rich Italian custard) and pumpkin cake with homemade maple walnut gelato.  Todd says that all of these things are yummy, and him I believe.
