Corktown Chamber
Orchestra
The
Orchestra’s season opener includes pieces by Beethoven, Mozart and Hindemith
with Alyssa LeFurgey-Smith on violin.
Tickets are $10, kids free. Thursday October 24 at 8 pm in Little

Global Cabaret
Festival
This
weekend, the Young Centre in the Distillery (50 Tank House Lane) is transformed
into one big showcase for the Global Cabaret Festival. Starting on Thursday October 24 at 7:15 pm
and running to Sunday at 8:15 pm, three Songbooks and a dozen Cabarets feature
over 150 performers. Headliners include
Jackie Richardson, Sharron Matthews, Molly Johnson and Ins Choi. For program details and tickets, click

Riverside WALKfest
On
Saturday October 26, our neighbours across the Don Valley are hosting their 5th
annual WALKfest. It includes nine
different walks through Riverdale. There`s a fitness dog walk, a savory
culinary walk, a sweet culinary walk, historic streets, medicinal plants and
herbs, urban planning, fashion &
design, kiddie costume walk, and Riverside nightlife walk. Our friend AV Atikian, formerly at JAMcafe,
will host a 2 pm cooking demo. There are
kids` activities, pumpkin giveaways, a haunted house and sidewalk sales. Prominent personalities will lead each

HALLOWE’EN EVENTS
Treats for kids
The
Local GEST (424 Parliament) is organizing two Hallowe’en family-friendly events
for kids in the next few days. On
Saturday October 26, there’s a Hallowe’en colouring contest for kids with
treats and prizes from 10:30 am to 1 pm.
Then, on the big day itself, Thursday October 31, kids can stop at the
Pub “after dark” to collect a treat.
Ghost Walk
The
CPA’s annual Hallowe’en ghost walk happens on Sunday October 27 at 7 pm. Meet at Winchester and Parliament and buy
your ticket there. Hear new stories,
meet a ghost, tour past haunted houses.
Please bring a flashlight and dress up in your scariest costume. $5 per person and $10 for a family and the proceeds
go to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association.
1st annual
pumpkin walk
The
Cabbagetown Residents Association is sponsoring a pumpkin walk in Riverdale
Park from 5 to 10 pm on Friday November 1.
Bring your pumpkin and a candle so you can add it to the display – more
pumpkins mean a bigger better display!
It’s happening in Riverdale Park.
The Daily Bread Food Bank will also be there at the Park gates (Winchester
and Sumach) to collect your donations of non-perishable food goods. Staff from the City of Toronto will collect
the pumpkins after the event for disposal.

Help the Scouts
Our
local 403 Toronto Scout Group needs volunteer leaders for the Beaver Scout
program. Beaver Scouts are a co-ed group
ages 5, 6 and 7. The program opens the
door for your child to learn about the world with outdoor activities, games,
music and sports. They meet weekly on
Wednesdays from 6 to 7 pm at St Peter’s Church.
The Group needs young, positive, caring leaders who enjoy playing and

CNH needs
photographers
Central
Neighbourhood House (349 Ontario) along with the Cabbagetown South Residents
Association is putting together a photography competition for young
people. Photography enthusiasts are
needed to run workshops to cover the basics of photography for the youth
participating in the event. If you’re

Museum news
The
Cabbagetown Regent Park Community Museum has released two new videos about our
neighbourhood history. The first covers the
century-long story of Central Neighbourhood House (349 Ontario). The second one features the personal
reminiscences of Dennis Caplice about his boyhood in Cabbagetown. Both can be
seen at the Museum’s Youtube site here. Both videos are also available from the
Museum in DVD formats.

You should have
stayed home: a G20 romp
Tommy
Taylor was a bystander during a G20 protest in 2010. He was arrested along with hundreds of other
people and he spent 48 hours in prison before being released without being
charged. His Facebook account went viral
and it’s the basis of his play about his experiences. Both NOW Magazine and the Globe & Mail
have published interviews about the play and its evolution. On stage at the Aki
Theatre (Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas E) until Saturday October 26. Thursday to Saturday, 8 pm, matinee Saturday

Lunch buffet at Butter Chicken Factory
This
week, the relentlessly hungry restaurant department here at the Review visited
Butter Chicken Factory (556 Parliament) for its lunch hour buffet. It’s a great bargain. The food is hot and fresh (not gummy and cold
like so many buffets) and includes appetizers, condiments, nan and papadom
breads, four main entrée dishes and dessert.
All for $9.95. Well worth the

F’Amelia
The
new wine bar at F’Amelia Extended (8 Amelia) has been launched and is already
getting busy. It’s open Thursday, Friday
and Saturday from 6 pm to 2 am and it’s a good spot for a stop after work or a
quick drink before dinner. Bookings for
private parties have started up – there are plans under way for a boozy afternoon
Baptism celebration, a 50th birthday and even (it’s true), a 25th
wedding anniversary.
Next
door at F’Amelia (12 Amelia), the truffle season is in full stride with truffle
specials being featured every night.
It’s also time for really good desserts –- this week, there’s chocolate
budino (a rich Italian custard) and pumpkin cake with homemade maple walnut
gelato. Todd says that all of these
things are yummy, and him I believe.
