LOCAL NEWS

Back again
The Bike Share rack in Riverdale Park is once again the focus of an effort to have it removed from its current location inside the Park.  This time, the Heritage Conservation District committee has just written to Councillor Pam McConnell about it.
The letter states that the rack detracts from the character, rhythm and overall setting of the area around the Necropolis Chapel, the Simpson House and the Donnybrook Pavilion.  You can read it online here.
The HCD Committee suggests that the rack be moved to a nearby boulevard beside Sprucecourt School on the southwest corner of Carlton and Sumach.
In November when the first public discussion was happening about moving the rack, the Cabbagetown Residents Association conducted an online opinion poll. It collected 739 responses in a couple of weeks.  721 of them favoured the current location and 16 wanted the rack removed.  HCD committee member Monica Kuhn says that the HCD committee was unaware of the poll.
The HCD committee didn’t consult other groups or individuals to get their input about this decision. After its letter was sent, it started an information campaign toward the rest of the community.
Local neighbours at Carlton and Sumach and in Sprucecourt Co-op were also not told about the committee’s suggestion that the bike rack be installed directly across the street from their homes.

Sign the petition
The Alcohol & Gaming Commission is being asked to approve a new mega club in the Port Lands, the area directly south of us on the waterfront.  If it’s given a green light, it’ll become the world’s largest nightclub with a capacity of 15,500 people.  You can have a voice against this application.  There’s an online petition - click here.

City budget consultations
Councillor Pam McConnell will host a public meeting about the City’s 2017 budget.  She’ll talk about the process and the allocations and then receive your input about it. City staff will also attend and be able to provide details and technical explanations.  Wednesday February 8, 6:30 pm, Regent Park Community Centre (402 Shuter at Sackville).

Aitken Place Park
The park is a proposed multi-purpose space on the waterfront where there’ll be places for kids to play, for pets and for quiet relaxation.  A piece of public art has been commissioned for it from Calgary’s Caitlind Brown, Wayne Garrett and Studio North.  Their work will be a large scale light projection called “Urban Porch.”  The park will be located east of Lower Sherbourne, south of Queen’s Quay.  Click here to see the details.

Congrats again Max
Max Perren coached Team Canada in the North American lacrosse championships held in Tampa Florida at the end of December.  Last September, this Team won the Canadian national championship for players under 19 and became eligible to continue to the North American stage.  They played a three-game series against Team USA from Long Island . They won and they came home with the Brogden Cup.
