A PERSONAL VIEW

Daycare gets approvals

In a letter dated October 21, the daycare proposal at Sackville and Amelia received approvals from the Ontario government for a facility with 80 places.  This is a big step forward for the project.  The project must now return to the Toronto-East York Community Council for its approval of the parking and traffic plans.  Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is opposed - she used procedural manoeuvres to derail it. She hasn’t put forward any rational reason for her opposition. She should give it a break.  The idea is worthy and the community will benefit from it.

LOCAL NEWS

Hallowe'en Happy Hour

The Cabbagetown BIA is organizing the Hallowe’en Happy Hour on Friday October 29.   Special menus and discounts will be available in our restaurants and stores, starting at 5 pm on Friday.  F’Amelia, Cranberries, Haldi, Souvlaki Express, Stout Irish Pub and Super Bargain are all participating.  Stores include Spiritleaf and the Epicure Shop.  More are being added - go to the BIA website to see the full list.

Help for last minute shoppers

Pumpkins are on sale at our local variety stores - Parliament Smoke (609 Parliament), Jamestown Milk (592 Parliament). Fairway (520 Parliament), Cabbagetown Organics (499 Parliament) and Sunny Green (224 Wellesley).  And at No Frills (449 Parliament) and Freshco (Parliament and Dundas).

The Pumpkin Walk is back

Carve your beauty and then take it over for a fun, gossipy event at the Pumpkin Walk.  Monday November 1, 5 to 9 pm, Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach). Organized by the Cabbagetown Residents Association.  (Photo:  Lenka Life Photography, Parliament Street News)

Congrats to Marci Ien

Ms Ien has been appointed to the federal cabinet as the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth.  She has long been involved with programs supporting underprivileged youth in Canada and around the world.  She’s a graduate from Ryerson University and has returned there by co-founding a scholarship for media students and by serving on the Board of Governors.  In the recent election campaign, she made issues for youth a central theme.

More success for Blair’s Run

Brenda Brown McNee recently organized walking tours in the Necropolis and James the Lesser cemeteries. Participants in last Sunday’s walk donated another $600 to the annual Blair’s Run campaign. These funds are earmarked for the Cabbagetown Youth Centre.

The community fridge

Paula reports that the fridge in front of Cabbagetown Organics (499 Parliament) is clearly a welcome boost for the community.  It’s filled daily and emptied quickly.  Sam at Cabbagetown Organics says that donors are also contributing cash for its operations.  This week, the fridge suffered a setback - someone removed every single moveable part from its interior including the shelves, the vegetable drawers, the butter keeper lid and the shelving inside the door.  On the positive side, the fridge is a member of the Community Fridges TO and their bike brigade loads it up every Wednesday.  The Parkdale Community Food Bank supplied hams for Thanksgiving.

Schools and COVID

The Toronto Star has developed an app that lists up-to-date info about COVID cases among students and staff in our schools.  We have nine schools in our immediate area. None of them reports an active COVID case.  Just type in the school name and the data will appear. It’s current to 2 pm on the day before the report.

Momo deliveries

If you got hooked on momos at the Cabbagetown Farmers’ Market over the summer, then there’s good news.  Nepali Momo are delivering them.  Check the website for menus and delivery details.

Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum Historical Tidbit

By Sally Gibson.  Cabbagetown was blessed with several neighbourhood theatres, including the Blue Bell which was later renovated and renamed the Gay at 309 Parliament. The Blue Bell started life in 1929 as a silent movie house. In 1933 it was renovated by noted theatre architects Kaplan & Sprachman, becoming a full- talkie house with 934 leather-backed seats and water-cooled air conditioning. Initially it was profitable, but as TV transformed the entertainment landscape, business changed. In 1954, the Blue Bell was again remodeled. Its name was changed to the Gay, a candy bar was added, and the number of seats was reduced. The theatre deteriorated – becoming “a run-down dump” according to frequent movie-goer and anonymous Cabbagetown chronicler, Punchy.  It was probably the only Toronto movie house with a bouncer for Saturday matinees who would grab any miscreants by the scruff of the neck and the seat of the pants and run them out the door. Those who managed to avoid the bouncer, hunkered down to watch much-loved B-rated horror flicks and sci-fi monsters … just perfect for Halloween frights. Later the Gay screened East Indian “Bollywood,” movies until it closed in the early 1980s.  (Image:  Blue Bell theatre during its prosperous 30s Cinema Treasures)

Cyril’s soup - vampire repellant

Freshly returned from his extensive trips in the Carpathian Mountains, Dr Ghoulart is thrilled to share with us the folk remedies he tested first hand in vampire-laden Eastern Europe.  Garlic is key but you had already guessed that…  His velvety garlic and potato soup is loaded with fresh, pungent garlic smothered with delicious locally grown potatoes and light cream (rest assured, his dairy-free version with coconut milk is equally delicious).  If you are as prone to vampire bites as I am prone to mosquito bites, you may want to consider his other discovery: a restorative fruit and vegetable juice that would simply nullify the effects of any bite! And it is lip-smacking good: red beets, oranges, pomegranates and mint. It looks like blood but tastes like ambrosia.  With these two concoctions, you are guaranteed a safe Hallowwen weekend. Enjoy!  Soup - one to 9 cups at $3/cup, 10 or more cups at $2.50/cup.  Juice - 2 cups for $9. Email him to place your order.

“Direct eye contact can be very compelling in a portrait, yet I feel that looking to the side or even down can also make a strong, evocative image. ”

LOCAL NEWS

Hallowe’en supplies

Double Take (310 Gerrard E) has a Hallowe’en section. Browse the shelves and make your own costumes.  Lots of good stuff.  Pumpkins are on sale at our local variety stores and at No Frills (449 Parliament) and Freshco (Parliament and Dundas). Carve your beauty and then take it over for a fun, gossipy event at the Pumpkin Walk. Monday November 1, 5 to 9 pm, Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach), organized by the Cabbagetown Residents Association.  (Photo:  Lenka Life Photography, Parliament Street News)

Beware renovation scammers

A crew is going door-to-door through the neighbourhood offering to restore patios - and possibly do other projects as well.  They’re rip-off artists.  Stephen Armstrong from Wellesley and Sumach has sent us a caution about them. His wife was intimidated and his neighbours were cheated out of $3,000.  It’s an old scam.

New staff at the BIA

Wing Lam Leung and Emma McInerney have joined Virginia in the Cabbagetown BIA office.  A short-term grant covers the costs until the end of January.  Wing Lam will be working on marketing plans and Emma is handling events planning.

The Royal Oak Inn

Concerns were raised in late September, especially in Cabbagetown South, about the possible relocation of a women’s detox centre into the old Royal Oak Inn (376 Dundas E).  Jennifer Stranges at Unity Health has reported that there have been no new decisions about the move into this site or another location since September.

Cabbagetown Farmers’ Market

The Market finished its season in Riverdale Park a week ago.  Among its new projects this year, Market vendors and staff operated a food bank.  The donations went to the Regent Park Mothers of Peace.  They report that twenty five families were helped every week with this fresh produce.  Sureya and her friends have extended a heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.

Underpass Farmers’ Market

Two more markets left for this season.  The Underpass Park Farmers’ Market (29 Lower River Street) in Corktown is open every week on Thursday from 4 to 7:30 pm. Check out the Underpass Facebook page for the latest news.

Weekly update about COVID vaccines

In Cabbagetown, both drug stores are vaccinating children who are 11 and turning 12 in 2021.  Walk-ins are welcome. Both Rexall (539 Parliament) and Shoppers Drug Mart (467 Parliament) have Pfizer in stock.  There are other locations close to you - not all of them have vaccines. In Regent Park, Shoppers Drug Mart at 593 Dundas E.  In  St James Town, the Shoppers at 565 Sherbourne. In Corktown, the Shoppers at 351 Queen E.  The websites for Rexall and Shoppers list times and details and make appointments.

Flu shots

Both Rexall (539 Parliament) and Shoppers Drug Mart (487 Parliament) have flu vaccines available.  Rexall is using a wait list system and has extra strength vaccines for seniors and vulnerable people and regular ones for the general public.  Shoppers is offering only the extra strength vaccine at this time.

Foundry photos

Friends of the Foundry organized a photo shoot of the Foundry buildings with Elliot Wright.  His finished images will be available later.  The Friends walked through with him and their photos show much of the interior.  The full set of their images can be seen on Flickr.

IN THE MEDIA

River City

Waterfront Toronto and Urban Capital have posted a YouTube video about River City.  It’s an informative discussion about these innovative buildings, the difficult property where they’re located and the need to develop good flood protections.

Oops, wrong date - community environment day

Last week, I listed the second environment day for our neighbourhood for Sunday October 24. That was wrong - it happened on Sunday October 17.  Thanks to Ray for spotting this problem.  Nevertheless, if you’re saving your stuff for a drop-off, go to 188 Bermondsey Road instead on Sunday October 24 from 10 am to  2 pm. It’s a drive-through event. Check the City website to see which items can be included.
