LOCAL NEWS

Annual pumpkin walk
The Cabbagetown Residents Association will hold its annual pumpkin walk in Riverdale Park (Sumach and Winchester) on Tuesday November 1 from 5 to 9 pm.  Bring your Hallowe’en pumpkin and a candle and show off your carving skills. Kids can dress up in their costumes all over again. It’s a lot of fun and a great chance to say hello to your friends and neighbours.  As always, there’ll be a donation box for your non-perishable food gift to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

What’s missing here
Photo: Keith Lawrance, Cabbagetown Residents Association
The two new parkettes at Amelia and Spruce are looking very spiffy.  At a glance, it seems that the work is finished.
One element, however, is missing.  The original plans called for a seating arrangement.  When the final stages of the work were underway, residents nearby on Spruce became alarmed.  They feel that the seats would attract rowdies who would cause considerable harm to their neighbourhood.
A meeting was held at the BIA (who are spearheading this work) with the Spruce Street residents, a City official, a member of Pam McConnell’s office, a Board member from the Cabbagetown Residents’ Association and the BIA.  The next day, at a full BIA Board meeting, the decision was taken to postpone the installation of the seats in both parkettes.
Unlike the tarp question in Wellesley Park a year ago, this reversal has not created a big expense.  According to the BIA, the seats had not yet been built and the cancellation came in time to avoid this cost.

Positive parkette news
Photo: Robert Ruggerio
Despite the cancellation of the seating, the new parkettes add a pleasant and welcome touch to Parliament Street.  Everyone involved should be congratulated.  They’ll be great venues for future events like the annual Christmas tree sale at Spruce or the summer Saturday music presentations.
By the way, as Keith points out online, the new tree pits are porous and will be given a final trim once they’ve hardened to allow water into the root system.

More improvements
The upgrades to the wading pool in Winchester Park are coming along nicely.  The work includes a new concrete surface, new splash pad features, site furniture like benches and umbrellas, new fencing and new trees.  If the good weather returns, the work will be finished this Fall.

St Peter’s Church
St Peter’s has held its last Sunday service in its historic building at 188 Carlton.  On October 30, the congregation will be blended into St Simon-the-Apostle (525 Bloor E).  They’ll be missed here.  Our best wishes for all the congregation’s new efforts in its new home.

CPA’s Cabbagetown Talks
On Tuesday October 25, the Cabbagetown Preservation Association held a successful meeting about Parliament Street and its future prospects.  Fifty people filled the Meeting Room at the Farm. Michael Sraga spoke about the existing commercial area and its strengths.  Eric Turcotte described how the Roncesvalles community transformed its commercial district.  Mike Major told the group about the role of a BIA and its mandate.  Over all, the discussion and a lively question period painted a positive picture of the possibilities for our area. The CPA is planning at least two more sessions on topics where an informed community can generate change.
