MORE LOCAL NEWS

Success for the Tour of Homes
Beautiful weather, a wide selection of intriguing homes and lots of community support guaranteed a success for the Tour of Homes.  Back after a hiatus last year, the Tour offered a fascinating collection of homes for visitors to experience.  Over 700 people are reported to have purchased tickets.  The volunteers were all cheery and well-informed.  Thanks to all the organizers and to The Cabbagetown Preservation Association for a job well done.

Bike theft
A rash of bike thefts has been happening in Cabbagetown over the late summer.  My own was stolen in late August. When I reported that theft to you here, several more people contacted me about their experiences. The Cabbagetown Residents Association has also listed a couple of recent thefts on its website.  These events raise the possibility that an experienced thief is at work and that somebody is buying these bikes from the thief. There are three good steps to take to protect yourself.
First, lock your bike properly and, if possible, store it indoors and out of sight.
Second, register your bike with Toronto Police Service.  This system works – click here and complete the form.
Third, call the police whenever you experience a theft.  They develop a case based on patterns and frequency.  They’ll be watching for the thief and they’ll be looking for the person receiving the stolen bikes.

Congrats to Corktown Ukes

Corktown Ukulele Jam played on TIFF’s Street Stage on Sunday September 13.  24 players performed songs from the movies from noon to 12:45 pm.  They shared the joys of the ukulele with the crowd and by all accounts, the glitterati loved them.

Meet Banff, Jasper and Algonquin
Kendall and Co (514 Parliament) are featuring maple canoe paddles made by a local artisan and inspired by our majestic parks.  Custom commissions will also be accepted.  These are part of Kendall’s collection of local handmade goods and arrivals from the world of international design.  There’s more here.

Cabbagetown Farmer’s Market
This is a delicious time of year to visit the market.  All sorts of veggies are available.  The market will continue on Tuesday afternoons from 3 to 7 pm until mid-October.  Riverdale Park West (Sumach and Winchester).

IN THE MEDIA

Corktown’s Little Trinity Annex
Photo: Arnaud Marthouret, Globe & Mail
On Friday September 18, the Globe & Mail told about the impressive renovations done by Little Trinity Church to its buildings at 339 to 403 King E.  The Little Trinity Annex - or the Francis Beale Buildings - has been nominated for the 2015 Heritage Toronto award – one of three nominees, the winner to be announced later in October.  Dave LeBlanc’s article is here.

New affordable housing
As part of the Pan Am Games legacy, two buildings in the Athletes’ Village are being converted into affordable housing units.  Wigwamen and the Toronto Fred Victor Centre will operate them – one with 145 units and a second with 108 units.  Toronto Metro has a good story about the buildings and the backlog of applications that makes them so necessary.

On the waterfront
Waterfront Toronto’s latest Newsletter is full of reports about developments from Ontario Place to the Don River.  There’s a lot of new planning and building happening in various chunks in this area.  The Newsletter gives concise updates about all of it.

A tarp reminder
The Globe & Mail isn’t going to let us forget the tarp tussle.  A small story appeared in the Saturday September 19 edition.  Fortunately, the story doesn’t seem to be anywhere online.

CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD REVIEW

Open Houses
This week’s listing features a modern townhouse in a heritage exterior.  Click here to read it.

LOCAL NEWS

Tour of Homes
The Tour of Homes is our second big Fall weekend event.  Sunday September 20 from noon to 4 pm.  You’ll visit the interiors of some of our most amazing homes - the big house on Sackville Street that’s recently been lovingly renovated, a large, beautiful loft that’s been used as a TV or movie set, several homes with extensive artwork and a meticulously restored family home with a collection of chandeliers.
Tickets are $30.  It’s a self-guided tour and the list, locations and descriptions of the homes are given inside your ticket.  Purchase yours locally at Epicure Shop (473 Parliament), Fairway Market (520 Parliament), Kendall & Co (514 Parliament), Lady Bug Florist (513 Church) and Mi Casa (238 Carlton).
Local businesses and restaurants are providing special “Thanks” for each ticket holder.  These incentives are also described inside your ticket.
You can also buy a ticket online and use Paypal.

Distillery District shooting
On Wednesday September 16 just after noon, police intercepted a car during an attempted theft.  When the car was stopped at Mill Street and Parliament beside the Distillery, gunfire broke out.  After multiple shots, the suspect was arrested.  Although it was a very busy time of day, no injuries were reported.  Global News has a report with several videos.

Improvements along the Don Valley
The Don Valley trail next to the river is one of the charms of our neighbourhood for cyclists and walkers.  Eventually, it’ll be part of the Pan Am Trail that will stretch 82 km across Toronto.  The City of Toronto has planned upgrades for the 4.7 km lower Don section and has announced that construction will start in September and be finished by next summer.  For more information on these plans, click here.

The Citadel Dance Program
Starting September 23, the Citadel’s 2015-2016 dance programs will offer weekly ballet classes in a professional studio for children and young people. These programs emphasize quality and accessibility and the classes include students from very diverse backgrounds.  Whether the young dancers have a lot of experience or none at all, the classes will take each student to a new level.  Scholarships and subsidized rates are available.  For class schedules and registration, visit the Citadel’s website here.  304 Parliament, (416) 364-8011.

A reminder - jobs during the election
Our Returning Officer has announced that there are job opportunities available for people who want to work on official duties during the election.  Please contact the Returning Office at 425 Bloor Street East (at Sherbourne, beside the subway), Suite 300.  The office is now open from 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday and noon to 4 pm on Sunday.  Call 1-866-714-6422, ext 2.

Last chance - Community Environment Days
Local residents can drop off unwanted trash, hazardous goods and household items for proper recycling and reuse.  Saturday September 26, Riverdale Park East (along Broadview north of Gerrard).  To see what items can be dropped off or picked up for your own use, click here.

Community cooking challenge
Toronto Public Health, the TD Learning Centre and Paintbox Bistro (555 Dundas E) are helping to organize The Apprentice Community Cooking Challenge.  Friday September 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.  Eight people have been studying various cooking skills and are now ready to compete with each other in the Challenge. It’s a program set up to train people from Regent Park who will continue on to restaurants, schools and catering companies as licenced food handlers.  So far, 65 people have been trained by Toronto Public Health and Chris Klugman at Paintbox Bistro. In Friday’s Challenge, the new chefs will prepare and display two dishes and a panel of chefs will select a winner.  Members of the public are welcome.

The Regent Park Catering Collective
The people enrolled in the Cooking Challenge are members of the collective.  Organized by Sureya Ibrahim, it was started in 2013 by people who wanted to know how to sell their food at farmers’ markets. The collective emphasizes a sense of community and belonging and an enjoyment of diversity.  As a result, its menus range from samosas to dumplings, from flavoured rice dishes to lasagna.  The collective ensures proper accreditation for its members, the development of individual’s skills and best practices, mentoring by industry professionals, and the development of a toolkit and practices for long-term growth.  Check out the group’s history and its catering menus online.

Now you see it, now you don’t
The blue tarp at the Wellesley Park splash pad is history. (Photo - May 21).
A new green one has been installed.  (Photo - Sept 17)
One knowledgeable resident has pointed out that the green tarp has cost the City of Toronto $10,000.  And there’s no confirmed home yet for the blue one so it could be wasted.  Let’s hope that the group who lobbied so hard for this change are now happy.

A quick correction
In last week’s Review, I said that Alan Waterhouse wrote the CPA’s new book, Adversity, Resilience, Prosperity.  Alan has corrected me and he points out that it was a collaborative project by the CPA’s Cabbagetown People committee including Sheila Schirmer, Gilles Huot, Margaret Rutledge and Christopher Dew.  Chris Waterhouse served as the research assistant.  Thanks Alan for the update – and to the entire committee, many thanks for creating an interesting and useful resource about our community.

Cabbagetown Festival
Congrats to all the artists, community groups, entertainers, restaurants and vendors for a fine show.  The weather made it really tough but everyone forged through these difficulties.  Blair’s Run went ahead with 185 runners.  The musicians made Parliament Street come alive – great bands and good sounds.  The Kidzone was busy.  The south end of Parliament Street and Carlton were more crowded than ever on both Saturday and Sunday – a happy trend for visitors and businesses.  And more local retailers brought their stuff outside onto the street instead of waiting for everybody to come inside.

Lynn in Italy
Lynn has just returned from a trip to Italy – a few days in Rome, several days cycling along the Adriatic coast and a final stop in Venice.  Her Cabbagetown Tee shirt was proudly displayed along the way.  Here are a couple of photos with Venice’s iconic plazas and streets as her setting.
