CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD REVIEW

This week's image - Riverdale Park, David Grant/reLEAF

In the Review...

Open houses – there’s a rare detached townhouse available in Owl House Lane.  View it on Saturday and read about it here.

Barbara’s Garden – she’s signing off now from her blog after a very active gardening season.  She’ll be back in the Spring with a note about cold frames in window wells.

One tough Cabbagetowner

Norm Betts is a renowned news photographer whose current work includes covering a rodeo circuit in shows across Ontario. On Wednesday at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, one of the rodeo bulls objected to Norm’s presence and tossed him three metres into the air.  He landed heavily, suffering a broken rib and some bruises.  He’s now okay and recovering at home.  The Toronto Star has an article and an incredible video about his airborne experiences. Click here.

Something’s up
A bit of news is floating around among the Cabbagetown cognescenti that an unnamed local group will soon be at home in a very nifty building on Parliament Street.  This rumour has generated considerable interest.  At the group - officially - mum’s the word.  Unofficially, those involved are so delighted they can’t keep quiet about it.  Let’s just say “Congrats” for now and thanks for a project that will bring great life to this street corner. Stay tuned for more.

Survey about morning care for kids
Barbra Sniderman has organized a survey to gauge neighbourhood interest in a before-school morning care program for school aged kids.  There are ten questions that you can answer very quickly.  Click here to see the survey.

Toronto Centre by-election news
A candidates’ debate is scheduled for Wednesday November 20 at Jarvis Collegiate (495 Jarvis at Wellesley).  It’s shaping up to be a biggie.  Doors open at 6:30 pm. The meeting starts at 7 pm.  John Tory is the moderator.  Seven community groups are promoting and sponsoring it including our own Cabbagetown South, Cabbagetown Residents, Corktown Residents and Regent Park Neighbourhood associations. If you can’t get to this one, there’s another at 7 pm on Thursday November 21 at Rosedale United Church (159 Roxborough Dr) – given the neighbourhood and the locale, this second meeting may be a tad more sedate.

Pumpkin walk success
The Cabbagetown Residents Association organized a pumpkin walk in Riverdale Park last week on the day after Hallowe’en.  Residents brought candles and pumpkins to line the sidewalk.  Congrats to the organizers and best wishes for an even bigger repeat next year.

A reminder about the charity bottle drive
Cabbagetown South Residents Association is having a bottle drive day on Saturday November 16 at The Beer Store (Gerrard & Seaton).  There’s a handy drop-off window where you can leave your bottles and the funds will be directed to the Association.  $500 was raised in an earlier campaign and the Association earmarked $50 for the school breakfast program at Lord Dufferin, $250 for Central Neighbourhood House (kids’ programs, after school snacks and neighbourhood cleanups) and $150 for its Spring 2014 cleaning and gardening projects.

Koilos’ new home

The Gooderham & Worts Neighbourhood Association reports that Koilos, the Distillery’s Monster, has moved to Muskoka.  Over the past summer, people noticed that he’s been missing.  Apparently, the Distillery leased the sculpture from its artist and that agreement ended this year.  The new owner had admired the piece and worried that it was being damaged in its Distillery home.  When the Distillery’s lease ended, he bought it, moved it to Muskoka and installed it on a dock where it can be enjoyed safely by everyone passing by.

Chowder chowdown
Also in the Distillery, twelve chefs compete for the title of 2013 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion.  Taste their seafood chowders paired with beer and then vote for your favourite.  It’s all part of a multi-city campaign sponsored by the Vancouver Aquarium to promote sustainable seafood.  Tuesday November 19, 7 pm, Fermenting Cellar (28 Distillery Lane).  Tickets are $50 and they’re available online here.

Is this cat lost?
Cynthia has reported that this cat shows up repeatedly in her yard on Winchester Street just east of the Toronto Dance Theatre.  It’s always very hungry so she worries that it may be lost.  If it looks familiar, send her an email at young0252@rogers.com
