LOCAL NEWS

Michael Cavanaugh
Our good friend Michael Cavanaugh died on April 27. He left a big legacy in our community and our city. His murals are painted on the LCBO wall, in St James Town and on Carlton. He organized the Bell Box project where local artists were commissioned to paint images on utility boxes across the GTA. He was a good artist - you can see his work on his website.

And he was an easy going, open minded guy. His partner Marie Belanger has written, "He is my one true love. Our shared adventures took us to many beautiful spots. We always held hands and walked in step. We relaxed into each other from the start, and like two peas in a pod were inseparable. I miss his touch and his laugh. But his art is with me. His music is with me. And his spirit is within me and will forever guide me.” Our sympathies go out to his daughters Simone and Esme and of course, to Marie. He will be missed.

Forsythia Festival
It was a very good time. The weather was okay - at least it didn’t rain! And the crowd was bigger and livelier than previously. The hot dogs, pop and chips were all sold. This year, there were two inflatables and both were popular. Well done to Katie, her committee and to everyone who volunteered and made it such a success.

233 Carlton - Women’s Drop-in Centre

Sean O’Donovan is a member of the Community Liaison Committee for the Centre and he’s reporting to us on progress there.  Plans now call for a June opening date.  Fred Victor is the community organization that will operate the centre as a low barrier 24-hour drop-in for women who experience gender based violence and homelessness. Unlike a shelter, there’s no intake or registration process and no beds.  It’s expected that some women will visit only during the day, some will stay overnight and some will use it for longer periods.  Current estimates are that between 21 and 32 women will stay overnight and recliner chairs will be used for them as needed,. It’ll have an arrivals area so clients don’t have to wait outside the building.  For a full description of these services, click here.

Heritage issues

Parliament Street is the only area in Cabbagetown outside a heritage designated district.  For over a decade, heritage advocates have lobbied for this designation.  It now appears that they have changed their target.  They have, instead, identified specific buildings that they consider significant and ranked them in importance.  They want the City to “designate” them.  This designation, similar to the one recently applied at the dance theatre (509 Parliament), gives the building heritage protection.  The Priority One category includes 411-415 Parliament, 433-443 Parliament, 450-460 Parliament,  473-491 Parliament,  502-508 Parliament,  542-552 Parliament,  549-563 Parliament, 583-585 Parliament and 562-588 Parliament.  The Cabbagetown BIA has been informed and they’re preparing a survey to their members seeking their opinions.

Congrats, Gilles

Gilles Huot received the King Charles II medal from Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont.  He’s been a leader in Cabbbagetown and Toronto on heritage issues.  He says, “Apparently, my deeds (good or bad?) didn’t go unnoticed. C’est mieux que de recevoir des tomates.”

Don Valley Art Club

Two Cabbagetown artists are showing their works at the Spring Awards Show & Sale.  It’s at the Papermill Gallery in Todmorden Mills (67 Pottery Road).  Wednesday to Sunday,  11 am to 5 pm, now until June 1. The website lists the artists on display.

The bear is safe

He’s an historic relic and a neighbourhood landmark.  For over thirty five years, this Teddy Bear has been sitting in a third storey Wellesley Street window, watching the world pass by.

Recently, the home’s owner took him out - he’s now very dusty and delicate and she wants to protect him from the sun’s further damage.  He’s back now in the window. If you can think of a game or you can provide a new home, email me and I’ll pass along your message - cabbagetownreview@gmal.com
