A PERSONAL OPINION

The election just got hot

Chris Moise is now facing a long-time critic, Daniel Tate, in the race to elect a City Councillor.  There’s no love lost between them.  Mr Tate is the guy who got into a yelling match with Mr Moise at City Hall which led to a reprimand to Mr Moise by the ethics commissioner which, in turn, led to Mr Moise getting a big rebate from the City coffers on his legal fees.  In the meantime, a moderate candidate Curran Stikus is also in the race and he must be laughing at the prospect of these two in battle. The mural is finished

The mural on the side wall of the Cabbagetown Youth Centre (2 Lancaster) is done. It’s big.  It has colourful vignettes of Cabbagetown life, like the two cabbage kids racing in Blair’s Run.  It’s been a big job from the start when the organizers gathered local neighbours for suggestions and then again for their approvals of the final designs.  Three experienced artists led the team of local volunteers - Esky, Poonan and Ryan. Their work will make the Flos Williams Lane brighter and more accessible. Be sure to drop by and check it out - down the lane beside The Beer Store to the west side of the CYC. 

  

Cabbagetown Pet Clinic

Sadly, the Clinic will close at 239 Gerrard E on Friday July 24. The clinic has been a reliable, friendly member of our community. Best wishes to everyone on staff for their new adventure.  It’ll be joining the Bay Cat & Dog Hospital (525 King E).  It’s nearby at the corner of King and Cherry. Welcome Vel Mart

Hema, Bharatha and Thiru have opened their new Indian grocery store at 430 Parliament.  They’re selling groceries, rice and spices.  It’s a clean, organized spot - well worth your visit and your support.

Scammers at The Distillery

Emails are circulating to small businesses encouraging them to be seasonal vendors at The Distillery.  They’re fake.  In one case, the vendor applied on the fake form, was “accepted” and then paid $1125.  Fortunately, he was able to get it back through his bank.  The police are investigating.

Holiday closure

Mark and his staff at St James Town Steak & Chops (516 Parliament) are taking a regular holiday.  The store will close between Monday August 3 to Tuesday morning August 11.


Cabbagetown Farmers Market 

Tuesday from 3 pm in Riverdale Park West (Sumach and Winchester).  The downpour last Tuesday made it tough for the vendors but Thames River had good corn and melons.  This week, the pop-ups are Sarah Nicole’s Artistry and Two Guys Making Candles. Streetcar cameras

Starting on Monday July 20 and continuing fo nine moths, the TTC is installing cameras on several routes in a pilot project to identify vehicles that illegally pass open doors.  They’ll be placed on cars on the 501 Queen, 504 King, 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton lines as well as other routes in the city.  This project is a test to determine how often this happens and whether the cameras can be used for future ticketing. Congrats Agak Agak

The Singaporean restaurant Agak Agak (253 Gerrard E) earned a favourable review in The Hungry Onion.  Several dishes are described and photographed, including this one showing rojak mixed jicama, cucumber, pineapple, green apple, and tofu puff, with a crushed peanut and dried shrimp dressing. .  Click here to read it. Movies at Stout

Taste of Regent Park

The kitchen is busy again.  Every Wednesday starting at 5:45 pm, Taste of Regent Park serves freshly baked goodies at the pizza oven in the Big Park (620 Dundas E).  


Toronto Outdoor Picture Show

In Corktown Common (155 Mill St - at Bayview and Mill) on Thursdays to August 6.  On Thursday July 23, the feature is It was Just an Accident and the short is Perfectly a Strangeness. On Thursday July 30, the feature is Speed. On Thursday August 6, the feature is Wildhood and the two shorts are Anyway I Piss Sitting Down and 6 Minutes per Kilometer - these were postponed from July 9 due to bad weather conditions.


Lassonde Art Trail

Every Saturday until August 22, take a short tour through this art installation in Biidaasige Park.  Over the weekend on July 25 and 26, a  new 10-acre section of the park will be opened.


Muddy Mercredis

A bilingual family drop-in at Allan Gardens.   You don’t need to speak both languages to attend. Kids ages 3 to 8 will get excited about urban agriculture and nature education.  Every week will be slightly different.  Different ages are also welcome.  From 10 am to noon every Wednesday to August 19 in the Children’s Conservatory (19 Horticultural Ave).

Spanish lessons at La Gloria

The Spanish language lessons at La Gloria (453 Parliament) are now offered twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 pm.  The date on Thursday was started to keep attendance at a lower level and to give each person a good chance to learn the daily exercises.  It’s recommended that people with an intermediate skill should attend.

On Saturday August 1, Jeff Barnes and Noah Zaccharin play at The Wing House (420 Parliament).  American blues, folk and country jazz.


Old Flame Brewery

On Friday from 7 pm, Saturday from 2 pm and Sunday from 2 pm, Old Flame (43 Tank House Lane) brings in a rotating list of singers and musicians. 


Live jazz

Johnny Gs (478 Parliament) hosts three evenings of live jazz every week - Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 to 10 pm.


Danny Marks

Danny takes the stage at Castro’s Lounge (2116 Queen E) on Saturday August 1 from 5 to 7 pm and then at The Smoke Show (744 Mt Pleasant) for his regular appearance on Sunday August 2 from 3 to 6 pm.  Great shows!


Whiskey Jack

Duncan Fremlin and his friends play in Ontario’s provincial parks throughout the summer, singing about bugs, fish, birds and outhouse fires.  This year, on Friday July 31, they’re bringing the same tunes to the Cameron House (408 Queen W) from 6 pm.
