LOCAL NEWS

Remembrance Day

Three ceremonies are scheduled for our area.  The Cabbagetown BIA is holding its third annual Remembrance Day service at 10:15 am at Carlton and Parliament.  The Church of St Peter & St Simon the Apostle (525 Bloor E)  is having its Remembrance Day service at 10:30 am with a full choir and a reading of the names of those from its congregation who fell in the wars. St James Cemetery is launching its first Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:30 am at the cemetery Chapel (635 Parliament).

Join us for lunch

You’re invited for lunch. First, some background info.  A group of guys had been meeting regularly at Cranberries to solve the world’s problems.  A few months ago, they had exhausted their insights and needed outside help.  So once a month, they’re inviting an interesting guest for lunch and a conversation.  It’s a great idea - Cranberries’ lunch is good and the conversations have been relaxed and captivating.  The first guest was Matina Stevis-Gridneff, Canadian Bureau chief for the New York Times.  The second was two-time Olympic medalist Sydney Payne.  This month’s guest is Bob Ramsay, a noted man-about-town and legendary storyteller.   Space is very limited.  If you’re interested in joining these lunches and being on the notification list, send an email. Details about the coming event are listed below.   cabbagetownreview@gmail.com

Ron Hume introduces Bob - “This will be a stimulating conversation with one of Toronto’s most interesting characters.  Bob is the author of Love or Die Trying. After a brilliant career writing speeches for leading politicians and CEOs, Bob became a drug addict and lost everything. Dr Jean Marmoreo, Canada’s leading MAiD authority, helped Bob recover from his addiction. During the recovery process, they fell in love and married. Bob now runs a speaker’s series that features the world’s greatest thinkers such as Niall Ferguson and Malcom Gladwell. He’s a brilliant conversationalist. This is a lunch you don’t want to miss.”  Tuesday November 12, noon to 2 pm.  $30.  We have ten spots available - first-come, first-served.  Send an email to get your place.  cabbagetownreview@gmail.com

Hallowe’en memories

Mural art

Toronto Community Housing and ArtHeart are looking for artists to design and create a mural for the new building at 175 Oak in Regent Park.  Three workshops are scheduled - Thursday November 7 at 4:30 pm at 150 River St, Saturday November 9 at 150 River St at 12:30 pm and Thursday November 14 at 230 Sackville at 4:30 pm.

Historic Queen East BIA

The push to revive the BIA along Queen from Victoria to River Streets has finally succeeded.  It’s been dormant since 2008.  Earlier this year, a steering committee was established and five new directors to its Board of Management were appointed by the City - Samuel Mandrozos, Carol Mark, Tara Silver, Corey Wells and Timothy Wing.   Best wishes to them.  As Cabbagetown has shown, a BIA can be a central focus for both its businesses and its surrounding community.

Art in the Tasting Room

Michelle Letarte, Beverley Daniels and Carole Milon will wrap up their exhibition in the Tasting Room (250 Carlton) this weekend.  They’ll be there from noon to 5 pm.  Their work explores the transformation of materials through time and environment.  The Tasting Room offers a gallery exposure for artists and a meeting space for 22 guests - send an email for more info.  bookings@danieletdaniel.ca .

Mitch Cohen’s new book

Mitch Cohen spearheaded The Daniels Corporation’s work in the revitalization of Regent Park.  Under his leadership, the area was transformed into the modern community that we now see.  He’s written about his experiences in his new book, Rhythms of Change.  A Community Book Launch will happen on Tuesday November 12 from 3 to 5 pm in the World Urban Pavilion (660 Dundas E, 3rd floor).  It’s a free event and you’re asked to register online.  His book is available at Spacings Store, $40.

Get your shots

Flu shots and the latest covid vaccines are now available at both Rexall (539 Parliament) and Shoppers Drug Mart (467 Parliament, 565 Sherbourne and 593 Dundas E).

Cabbagetown wildlife

We set up our backyard bird feeder on Saturday.  Opening day was an amazing success.  We had visits from downey and hairy woodpeckers, juncos, red breasted and white breasted nuthatches, chickadees, sparrows and a male and female cardinal.  A great start for the winter season.

IN THE MEDIA

Graffiti removal

Toronto Today reports that two BIAs are tired of delays by the City of Toronto to remove graffiti on their property.  Matt Mohan from the Cabbagetown BIA has a $10,000 budget to support small businesses.  But the City’s properties are outside his jurisdiction and they’re regularly neglected - bike racks, parking metres and sidewalks.

Success at Canadian Stage

Canadian Stage (26 Berkeley) is one of our major theatre companies.  For the first time since 1987, it’s been able to clear its debts and post a surplus, all while maintaining a vigorous program.  Brad Wheeler has written a Globe & Mail story about this success.

Kendall & Co

Kendall & Co (514 Parliament) is your holiday shopping destination. Once again, the window is awesome.  Open 7 days a week from now until Christmas.  Come see the magic.  There’s more info online.

Garbage clean-ups

Carolyn wants to know who is responsible for cleaning up this debris. In fact, it’s the store’s job.  This mess happens when someone is looking for goodies in the trash.  The store should get it back in the bins as soon as possible - usually in the morning.  If the garbage truck has already gone by and the stuff is still on the street, the store has to clean it anyway. If it lingers, then people should call 311.
