LOCAL NEWS

Remembrance Day

The Cabbagetown BIA held its third annual Remembrance Day service at Carlton and Parliament.  Local residents and business owners took part along with our MP Marci Ien, Councillor Chris Moise and our MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam. After the ceremony, Gilles Huot conducted a tour of the military graves in the Necropolis.

At St James Cemetery, people went to the cemetery Chapel (635 Parliament).  Reverend Steven Fields conducted the service.  There were tours to gravesites afterward.  Two police horses along with members of the fire department and police officers were also on hand.

Thanks Anji

Anji from Blooming Flower Bar (557B Parliament) provided the stunning red wreath for the Remembrance Day ceremony.

Lunch conversations

As mentioned last week, a small group got together over lunch to meet Bob Ramsay.  It’s one of a series of monthly luncheons where local residents can meet accomplished people in an informal conversation.  The next one is scheduled in January and monthly after that.  It’s a small room, so only 15 to 20 people can be accommodated.  If the initial list is full, there’ll be a waiting list in case someone has to bow out.  Send an email to get your place.  cabbagetownreview@gmail.com

Progress at Amelia Gardens

The soil is refreshed.  The paths are laid out.  Mulch has been applied.  Many thanks to Hepburn Landscaping for its continued generosity.  Neighbours have donated river rocks.

And, above all, a volunteer group is handling the tough jobs and helping to lay out the basics before winter arrives.  Parliament and Amelia.

Michael Cavanaugh is coming to the Tasting Room (250 Carlton) - his art is on display from Saturday November 16 to mid-February. The Tasting Room offers a gallery exposure for artists and a meeting space for 22 guests - send an email for more info.  bookings@danieletdaniel.ca.

It’s about his experiences as The Daniels’ Corporation CEO during the Regent Park revitalization.  He read from two portions of the text and then sang two songs that he wrote to celebrate the Regent Park community’s amazing accomplishments. His book is available at Spacings Store, $40.

IN THE MEDIA

214 - 230 Sherbourne

In early October, City Council approved plans for a residential building with 615 units at this site.  The project has been the focus of a three-sided public relations war.  On the one side, 230Fightback, an anti-poverty group, has been loudly condemning the developer and demanding low-cost affordable housing. In the meantime, KingSett Capital, the developer, has been muttering placating comments while making progress with its application. And in the middle, the Mayor and Councillor Moise have been ducking the bullets.  Laura Hull has written about all of this in November’s edition of The Bridge.

Save the date - Regent Park Film Festival

The Regent Park Film Festival is lined up for four days of free films from Thursday November 28 to Sunday December 1.  There’ll be a school program running beside the general one.  The Opening Night Party will be held in the lobby of the Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas E) on Thursday from 6 pm.  The opening night film is Boxcutter along with the short film Bonnarien.  Program details and tickets are available here. blogTO has run a nifty summary of the Festival’s history and program.
