Cabbagetown Residents' Association annual meeting
Tonight`s the night – Thursday June 13 at 7 pm at Stout Irish Pub (221 Carlton).  The association will review its annual business and elect a slate of officers for next year`s Board of Directors.  Congrats are owing to the group for several fine initiatives over the past year, from campaigns to plant new trees to the renewed and exciting 2013 Forsythia Festival.  Its website is a useful bulletin board for community events.  The Board is in touch with the police at 51 Division about local safety issues.  There are also several other groups – local schools, the Boys & Girls Club and Riverdale Park – who have benefitted from the CRA`s support.
Plus, the Board has figured out a smart way to gather a crowd to the Annual Meeting.  There`s a wine tasting sponsored by the Lifford Agency.

Summer solstice benefit concert
The Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre (424 Parliament) is having a musical feast next weekend, Saturday June 22 at 8 pm.  The concert is a fundraiser and its proceeds go toward the marvellous programs for the kids enrolled there.  The Centre offers instruction for young people in several musical instruments, in karate and in the visual arts.  Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and they accept Mastercard and Visa.  Check out the CCAC`s activities at its website.

Cabbagetown Youth Centre
The CYC is distributing its program for summer camps and activities.  There`s something for kids ages 3 through 18 - sports, performing arts and computer camps.  Little kids can join morning or afternoon playgroups.  Sports include tennis, soccer, basketball and karate.  All of this activity happens in local schools and at the CYC`s Lancaster Street facility.  Watch for it in your mailbox and fill in the handy Registration Form.  You`ll find a handy online version here.

Congrats and bon voyage to Angelene Tullet
Angelene is now visiting London England with twelve of her paintings.  Her works are part of a show at Vibe Gallery.  Called VibeAffordable, it`s her first international show and she`s joining about a dozen other artists there for the next two weeks.  She`s a Cabbagetown resident – born and raised here.  She`s just had a very useful session with Jack Grunsky who helped her with an epoxy coating for four pictures.  Her paintings can been seen at her personal website and Vibe also has a website here.

Summer art courses
Jack Grunsky is offering another eight-week course in drawing and acrylic painting for beginners from Wednesday July 3 from 1 to 3:30 pm in his Wellesley Street studio.  Jack`s work has been shown in galleries in Canada and abroad since 1977.   The fee is $320 (plus HST).  He has a detailed flyer available for you and he can provide details and the materials list for the course.  You can also see his website here. To contact him, send an email to jgrunsky@sympatico.ca .

Hey – what’s this?
The building at 456 Parliament is still undergoing repairs and renovations following the fire that happened there three years ago.  Its retail spaces have been available for rent for a considerable time and, I’m told, there have been offers in the past for these spaces.  For some reason, those offers were not accepted and there have been delays in the construction activity.  All of this is the owners’ concern.
It’s our concern, however, when the building is left with this kind of mess outside.  The surrounding stores and the general neighbourhood suffer as a result.  Furthermore, the feet on the protective fencing stick out dangerously onto the sidewalk.  A building inspector has been visiting this block regularly to handle other projects nearby.  Maybe he can get busy here and encourage the building owners to clean up their property.

Regent Park Farmers` Market
Wow – this is a modern market.  The organizers have launched a website and it`s got useful info.  You`ll see what`s fresh this week and which vendors are selling their produce.  There`s a map to show you how to get there.  The market offers regular fresh-from-the-farm fare and also sells fruit and veggies from small plot and rooftop gardens across the city.  It`s located on Regent Park Blvd, on the east side of the Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas E).  Open Wednesdays, 3 to 8 pm until the end of October.  Click here to learn about the asparagus and rutabagas.

RESTAURANT NEWS

Stuart Graham at Peartree
Stuart is a Cabbagetown resident and artist whose work has been widely displayed in Toronto.  He`s been doing plein air oils since 2000.  He`s a member of the Ontario Plein Air Society and the Don Valley Art Club and he`s exhibited successfully with both groups.  His work is now hanging at Peartree (507 Parliament) until July 31.  You can check out his portfolio here.

Toast the Night
On Friday June 14, the Flying Beaver (488 Parliament) is hosting a fundraiser for the Daily Bread Food Bank.  It’s a night of singing, burlesque, acting and comedy monologues by a dozen performers.  Tickets are $10 (in advance) and $15 (at the door).  For more info, click here.

A busy weekend at Stout
The Back Alley Beer Festival happens this weekend at Stout (221 Carlton).  Twenty craft brewers are taking part.  There are two sessions, at 1 pm and 5 pm on Saturday, June 15.  Tickets are $20 which includes admission, a free Ontario Craft Beer glass and five 5-ounce drinks.  Go to the Stout website to get your advance tickets.  It’s part of the Ontario Craft Beer week celebrations.
On Father`s Day, Sunday June 16, Erin is serving a filet mignon and lobster tail special.  Every Dad gets a complimentary single malt scotch and a branded glass keepsake.  Sorry guys, bad news – if you`re a Dad several times over, you still only get one free drink.

Toronto Jazz Festival
The Dominion on Queen (500 Queen E) has a full program as part of the Festival running from Friday June 21 to Saturday June 29.
On Friday June 21, Moo`d Swings (a Cabbagetown favourite – nostalgic swing music from the `40s and `50s) opens at 6 pm followed by Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo with Brazilian and Latin at 10 pm.  Dennis Coffey (a member of the Funk Brothers studio band) starts the Saturday program at 4:30 pm.  Que Isso at 9 pm has more Brazilian jazz and Ronnie Arturo plays after hours jazz from 1 to 3 am.  Sunday`s program starts with the York Jazz Ensemble, a 9-piece swing band, from 2 to 5 pm.  Quarrington & Taft appear at 6 pm and the Shafton Thomas Group at 10 pm to 1 am.
For specific listing details, check out the entertainment page on the Dominion`s website.  You can also scroll down here on the Review to see the day-by-day program.

Fare Game

Both patios are now open and rolling at Fare Game (195 Carlton).  There`s an open-area patio that`s ideal for viewing the world beside the building on Ontario Street and a second, charming one hidden away at the back.  The Sunday brunch menu (noon to 4 pm) has been expanded to include eggs benedict.  The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week.  You can see its menu and make your reservations at the website.

HOP`s rooftop patio
Tanya and Beau are in the final stages in their preparations for their new upstairs patio.  It`s been very well designed for both comfort and privacy.  The surrounding walls and floors are beautifully stained wood under an open-air roof.  A few details with the licences and permits still have to be settled and then the summer can begin.  You can see more pictures on the Facebook page.  House on Parliament (454 Parliament).

Congrats Café Olya
Café Olya (540 Parliament) has just had a great review in Chowhound full of phrases like ``awesome``, ``amazing`` and ``truly artisanal``.  You can read it here.  Of course, the Cabbagetown Neighbourhood Review previously said and still believes that ``yummy`` covers it all.

Summerlicious, July 5 to 21
The summer`s annual foodfest happens in July – reservations open next Thursday, June 20.  Two nearby restaurants, both in The Distillery, are participating -  Archeo (416-815-9898) and Pure Spirits Oyster House (416-361-5859).  There`s a map, a general list and a neighbourhood list on the Summerlicious website here.

SHOPPING NEWS

Welcome Spruce
Kim Alke and Tara Sameshima opened their new store, Spruce, at 455 Parliament just last Monday.  It’s going to be a great addition to our neighbourhood.  Their focus is on unique, local and handmade products and on vintage products.  They’ll highlight home accessories like pillows, glassware and pottery.   You can see updates about the store and its offerings at the Spruce Facebook page.
They plan to hold special events regularly inside Spruce.  On Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm, they’ve invited Leonie Lilla, a Swiss-trained chef, to have a tasting of her pickles, preserves and syrups.  Drop in and check out her goodies and the store.
In addition to her work at Spruce, Tara is a photographer and you can see her work at her website.

Speaking of newcomers
There are two baby parrots, just eleven weeks old, at Menagerie Pet Shop (549 Parliament).  Drop in and have a look at them, especially if you can bring young kids with you  (It’s a really nifty place with lots of fish, birds, reptiles and specialty treats and toys – your kids will love it.) As you can see, the birds love Michael.  By the way, you can take one home for just $1499.  They’re curious and affectionate and worth every penny.

Honey Girl at Sundara
A new shipment has arrived at Sundara Yoga Studio (492 Parliament).  Honey Girl is a beautiful skincare line made from raw Hawaiian honey, beeswax, propolis, pollen and royal jelly. These creams, toners and balms contain some of nature’s finest anti-aging agents. These ingredients work together to heal and renew your skin.  Product descriptions and prices are here.

LOOKIN` GOOD

Eric Morse visited the Ithaca NY Festival recently and talked to Caleb and Fiona at the Purity Ice Cream booth.  He sent us this souvenir pic.  He`s restarting a favourite old trend here – bragging to the world about his Cabbagetown credentials.  If you have a picture of yourself with our glorious old Cabbage flag or our trendy Tees, send it along and it`ll become part of our new gallery.  It`s been a while since we enjoyed this habit so ``thanks`` to Eric for getting us going again.
