Gilles’ guided tour
Gilles Huot led a walking tour along Parliament to highlight the heritage targets among the businesses. This list and the effort to designate them as heritage sites has circulated among the Cabbagetown BIA members. Their response was mixed. Heritage staff at the City of Toronto have received it and are asking for additional details. Local heritage advocates realize that many buildings will need repair and renovations and that the entire process will be long and occasionally difficult.
Catherine Tammaro
Catherine Tammaro is a local Indigenous artist. Her new work is in Draper Park near The Well. It’s called Spirit of the Woods and it will be unveiled and dedicated on Wednesday September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 1 to 2 pm in The Seven Generations Garden at 19 Draper Park (Spadina and Front). Truth & Reconciliation
On September 29, join the Anishnawbe Health Foundation in the Distillery (55 Mill Street) for an evening “to listen, learn and reflect on the histories and ongoing impacts of the residential schools.” Tuesday, September 29 at 7 pm.
Don River floods
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority reports that the big storm that passed through here a couple of weeks ago dropped between 65 mm and 93 mm of rain. Although there was flooding on the Don Valley Parkway because of its location beside the river, the work further downstream with a new river mouth and new landforms protected the new park and worked as designed.
Canary District yard sale
Three blocks filled by more than 40 vendors selling gently used and handcrafted goodies. There’ll be vintage and new clothing plus bags, jewellery, shoes, baby items, books, household items and more. Saturday Septmber 26 from 11 am. Front Street Promenade from Cooperage to Bayview.
Laneway celebration
The planting and reconstruction on Drovers and Verner Lane is finished. Celebrate this work and the new mural on Friday September 25, 4:30 pm. There’ll be live entertainment, music, games and refreshments. Drovers Lane runs west from Parliament at the corner of Gerrard.
15th annual garlic festival
Visit Allan Gardens (160 Gerrard E) for the annual garlic festival. Over 70 vendors will bring sweet and savoury garlics, garlic pickles, relish and sauces. There’s even garlic beer, cocktails and wine. Games and contests. 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday September 27. Free.
Cabbagetown Farmers Market - new times
The Market is opening earlier through the rest of the season. Tuesday from 2:30 to 6:30 pm in Riverdale Park West (Sumach and Winchester). Rueneau Clothing is back with handmade articles, Warner Farms has plums and prunes and Rogue Farms has pawpaws. We’re near the end of the tomatoes and corn but check at Thames River - their stuff so far has been yummy. Holly Clausius is singing. Click here for more info.

Allan Gardens Saturday Market
The Market is busy now - twenty vendors are scheduled for Saturday. Open from 10 am to 2 pm every Saturday outdoors at the Children’s Conservatory (19 Horticultural Ave). For more info, click here.
ELECTION NEWS
Election dates
Advance polls are open from Tuesday October 6 to Sunday October 11, 9 am to 7 pm daily. Election day is Monday October 26 from 10 am to 8 pm. Candidates’ signs will be available and on display in front of homes and businesses after October 1. Check out your registration on the voters’ list - click here and go to Voter’s Information. If you need to add your name or make changes, the deadline for online info is 7 pm on Sunday October 11. You can also add your name in person at the polling station at the advance poll or election day. A digital voter card is available after September 1 and the printed version is in the mail after Monday September 28.
Find the candidates
The City of Toronto has an official list of candidates in our Ward. It includes contact info where available. It lists the people running for offices for Mayor, Council and the various school boards.
Corktown candidates’ debate
The Corktown, Distillery District and Canary District residents associations are hosting a candidates’ debate on Monday, September 28 at 6:30 pm in the YMCA Community Room (461 Cherry). It’s full but the online version is available - click here for the Eventrite link.
Toronto Centre debate
The Bridge and the TMU journalism school are sponsoring an all-candidates debate on Wednesday October 7 at 6:30 pm in Central Neighbourhood House (349 Ontario).
FESTIVAL TIDBITS
Win a $100 gift certificate
The Cabbagetown BIA wants your views about the Festival. They’ve published an easy 3-minute survey. When your answers are entered, you’ll be eligible to win one of two $100 gift certificates. The deadline for entries is Wednesday September 30. Click here.
Sprucecourt
The school rented locations along Spruce Street to vendors during the Festival weekend, attracting visitors who also went to the art show in the park. It’s an annual fundraiser for the school. Over $3,000 was raised this year.
Blair’s Run
By Thursday morning, $65,350 was raised to support the BGCTO Toronto Kiwanis (Cabbagetown Youth Centre). There’s a link on the Blair’s Run website where you can see the race results and the donors list.

Rapid Photo
Two nifty events are happening next week at Rapid Photo (434 Parliament). On Sunday, September 27 from 2 to 4 pm, there’s an Adult Painting Session for beginners. - come even if you’ve never done any painting before. Dylon will take you through the basics in a relaxed format. Bring your kids.
On Thursday October 2 and Friday October 3 from 1 to 3:30 pm, there’s a polaroid session - enjoy taking home a souvenir vintage polaroid along with a modern digital print.

Franco Ontarian Day
Decoy (370 Queen E) is hosting Bellwoods Brewery and four of Quebec’s finest breweries. Together, they’re making a lineup of different beers. DJ Beurre is spinning. Friday September 25, 4 pm to 2 am.
Oktoberfest in the Distillery
Over the next two weekends from 2 to 9 pm - September 26 and 27 and October 3 and 4. The Pure Spirits Smoker will have a special Oktoberfest menu. The Black Forest Band will play on the Trinity Stage from 2 to 5 pm and then there’ll be live music in the Pure Spirits courtyard from 6 to 9 pm. On Sundays, there’ll be Oktoberfest Trivia with Quizmaster Jess in the courtyard from 5 to 6 pm.
Oktoberfest at Mill Street
Enjoy special German-inspired food, Fiest-bier lager and an exclusive Mill Street beer stein. The menu includes schnitzel, bratwurst, roast chicken, sauerkraut and more. There’ll be live music, games and more until October4. Mill Street (21 Tank House Lane)
Line dancing
Free dancing sessions in the Distillery will continue into early October. On Wednesday evenings at 6 pm, it’s for intermediate dancers. On Fridays at 6 pm, it’s for beginners.
