FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENTS


Cabbagetown Short Film Festival

Gina has, “an awesome lineup of 12 shorts for the Gala Screening....from Canada, Iran, Palestine, Philippines, USA, Korea, Australia, UK,Turkey, France, Columbia”  Her annual festival is moving because her local headquarters at the Winchester Theatre isn’t available this year.  The 2026 live screening will happen at the Central YMCA Auditorium (20 Grosvenor St) on Wednesday September 9.  The virtual screening happens from September 10 to 12. $20/ticket for both screenings. If you go to the live event, you’ll automatically get a ticket for the virtual screenings as well.  Click here to buy your tickets.

Volunteers wanted


The Cabbagetown Festival. You’ll be an activity assistant, a volunteer supervisor,  stage and sound support, security support and event set-up and a dismantling assistant.  High school students get volunteer hours.  There’ll be free snacks and meals.  You’ll get hands-on event management experience and you’ll have fun with the music, food and community vibes.  It all happens on Parliament Street on September 12 and 13.  Please apply before August 9 - click here.


Cabbagetown Art & Crafts Show.  The organizers need people to help before the show on Friday and Saturday. They also want Show Ambassadors during the show each day to support the artists.  September 11, 12 and 13. To learn more, click here. To volunteer, send an email to Jennifer.

Blair’s Run

Team registration is now underway.  There’s a link on the Blair’s Run website to complete if you’re registering your team.  ROCK Steady Boxing is a group working at the Cabbagetown Boxing Club for people with Parkinson’s.  They’re signing up and getting organized. The Berkeley Street Gardens

Louis-Philippe Rochon has posted pictures of the gardens online.  They’e in full bloom now. The gardeners and neighbours welcome people who want to visit and enjoy them. Congrats to everyone who tends these beautiful areas on the street. Berkeley Street south of Drovers Lane.

Accident on Parliament

A serious collision between an ebike and a car sent three people to hospital on Tuesday morning.  The street was closed between Wellesley and Amelia and traffic was redirected west along Prospect.  A child and three adults were taken to hospital. Police are investigating.  The parties involved stayed at the scene.  (Photo: CP24)

Allan Gardens Conservatory

Councillor Chris Moise sponsored a successful motion at City Council to allot $10 million for the Allan Gardens Master Plan and the new Greenhouse Link.  The Conservatory will be expanded to 32,000 square feet.  Planning and construction will be done in consultation with the Friends of Allan Gardens.

Cabbagetown South giant yard sale

Save the date - on Sunday August 16, there’ll be multiple households selling treasures in the Cabbagetown South Giant Yard Sale. 9 am to 3 pm, rain or shine. Look for vinyl records, jewellery, clothing, toys and more. Interested households on Ontario, Berkeley and Seaton should start collecting their best goodies and call Daniel to register at (416) 666-0311 or email him at daniel@teambloch.com. If you participate, your location will be advertised on posters, Facebook and Instagram. $20 per household.

Great Cabbagetown Clean-Out

The third annual garage sale to support Dixon Hall on Saturday September 12, 7 am, 89 Winchester.  They need your stuff - clothing, dishes, kitchen gadgets, electronics and more.  All proceeds go directly to the Dixon Hall Music School.  Contact Christina at (416) 427-7512 or Frank at (416) 709-5946 for pick-ups if you live in Cabbagetown or to make arrangements if you live somewhere else.

Holiday closure

Mark and his staff at St James Town Steak & Chops (516 Parliament) will be back from their holidays on Tuesday morning August 11.

Sue Newton

Sue is a personal trainer with twenty years’ experience working with groups and individuals.  She says, “My passion always has been a deep desire to shift a person’s present and future through movement…bringing strength, mobility and agility training to clients in their homes/condo gyms, virtually and at Training Lane located at 487 King Street East in Toronto.  I also teach live strength, balance and yoga classes online six days a week in a membership based group.”  Check out her website for more info and her rates.

Black Rabbit Gallery

Benny Bing has opened his new space in Regent Park (35 Tubman) to offer opportunities for aspiring artists as well as showcasing his work.  He wants it to be a place that becomes part of the neighbourhood. Toronto Life did an article about his project - click here to read it.

A tough day in St James Town

Two fires occurred in St James Town apartments on Tuesday. 


The first, at approximately 3 am, damaged a 8th floor unit at 666 Ontario Street.  Two adults and two children were sent to hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition  Fire fighters noted that ebikes and lithium batteries added to the blaze but don’t know whether they started it.  Global News covered the story - click here. The second fire took place on the 19th floor at 200 Wellesley at approximately 10:30 am, apparently starting in the kitchen.  A man died in that fire. CBC has a report - click here. (Photo: City News)


COMING EVENTS


Country Fest at the Distillery

Free line dancing lessons in the Distillery - for beginners on Fridays August 7, 14 and 21 and for intermediate dancers on Wednesdays August 12 and 19.  All lessons start at 6 pm. Live music happens daily from 1 to 4 pm and 5 to 8 pm.  On Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 pm, there’s Nashville Nights with a DJ.  Mechanical bull rides from 1 to 9 pm on weekdays and 1 to 10 pm on weekends.  Watch out for art carts and country markets, face painting, photo ops, cattle roping and carnival games from 1 to 9 pm daily.  Participating restaurants will have a southern menu throughout the festival. 

Taste of Regent Park

The kitchen is busy again.  Every Wednesday starting at 5:45 pm, Taste of Regent Park serves freshly baked goodies at the pizza oven in the Big Park (620 Dundas E).  

Lassonde Art Trail

Every Saturday until August 22, take a short tour through the art installation in Biidaasige Park.  A  new 10-acre section of the park was opened over the weekend on July 25 and 26.


Muddy Mercredis


A bilingual family drop-in at Allan Gardens. You don’t need to speak both languages to attend. Kids ages 3 to 8 will get excited about urban agriculture and nature education. Every week will be slightly different. Different ages are also welcome. From 10 am to noon every Wednesday to August 19 in the Children’s Conservatory (19 Horticultural Ave).

Pop-op paint day

Stout Irish Pub (221 Carlton) has a new Sunday event - Bonnie Devine will present pop-up paint days.  It’s a free drop-in event and she brings the supplies.  Kids are welcome.  Sundays August 16 and 30 from 1:30 to 5 pm.  Bonnie is an impressive artist - check out her Instagram here.

Soulpepper

Divine Brown presents Revolutionary Women in Blues at Soulpepper (50 Tank House Lane). Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith all shaped American culture through their music.  On stage from August 13 to 23.  Click here for info and tickets.
