Waterfront Toronto update

The proposed Keating Channel bridge is only one step in recent construction at Waterfront.  Quayside is a new 4.9 hectare community now being built at the foot of Parliament Street.  The first phase will have 553 affordable homes with 57% of them in 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units.  There will also be 1,170 condos.  Residents will move in in 2031. Winter coats needed - a reminder

Lisa Marie Doorey and Cheryl Thompson are collecting gently used medium and large winter coats for Covenant House.  Due to the winter’s harsh weather this year, they’re struggling to meet the needs of homeless youths.  Send an email to Lisa Marie or Cheryl if you can make a donation

Garden tour - change of date

Ramadan at Rayah

Throughout Ramadan (to March 19), Moroccan Iftar is available daily at Rayah (505 Parliament).  On March 6 to 8, Tunisian Iftar.  By reservation only.  It’s a prix fixe meal, $50.  For menu details, click here. The regular menu is also available. 

Iftar 2026

Free meals to celebrate Ramadan for Regent Park residents at 150 River Street - Thursday February 26 and Fridays March 6 and 13.  Meal times are adjusted for each sunset, 5 to 8 pm.  Organized by the Toronto Centre of Learning & Development, “Join us to break fast and pray Maghreb prayer together”.

Eid Bazaar

Local vendors will offer henna, jewellery, clothing and more.  Thursday February 26 and Fridays March 6 and 13, from 3 to 7 pm.  150 River Street.

Water meter repairs

70% of the City’s meters have already failed. The rest are expected to die by September.  To fix the problem, the City is replacing them in a zone-by-zone approach.  We’re in Zone 1 and work here will happen in the Spring and summer.  NOW has published details about the procedure and the preparations that we need to handle.  Many thanks to Keith for sending this link. New construction in Regent Park

Toronto Community Housing and Tridel have started to build the next phase in the Regent Park revitalization.  The first project is a 26-storey rental building that’ll be finished in 2029. This phase will be built by Tridel with eleven buildings east of Parliament to River Street on Gerrard.  Alyshah Hassam and Victoria Gibson have written in the Toronto Star about the new construction at Gerrard and Dreamers Way.  (Photo: Nick Lachance/Toronto Star).

Poverty in Toronto in the Great Depression

The Carlton streetcar

Construction has started at Bay and College to repair and upgrade the streetcar tracks, sewers and overhead power lines.  This affects the 506 streetcar that comes through Cabbagetown.  It’s rerouted down to Dundas from McCaul to Parliament and then up Parliament to Gerrard.  The work happens until mid-April and the regular route will be used until July to accommodate FIFA’s world cup events.  Route changes will then return until December.  blogTO has published details about the new routes and the bus schedules. Movies at Stout 

Weekly free movie nights at Stout Irish Pub (221 Carlton). The lineup features family movies - bring your kids. Allan Gardens Seedy Sunday

Events at Soulpepper

Improv. Soulpepper (50 Tank House Lane) is inviting experienced artists, enthusiasts and casual onlookers to learn more about improvisation.  The final class happens on Tuesday March 10. Registration here.

Sequins’ Clubhouse Series

Outdoor skating rinks

Two local rinks are open on Thursday March 5  - Regent Park (480 Shuter) and Moss Park Arena (140 Sherbourne).  Riverdale Park East (550 Broadview) and Sherbourne Common (5 Lower Sherbourne) are closed due to ice conditions. Check the City’s website for specifics about each rink - local conditions and the weather will affect rink openings.
