Weekend weather forecast
Ingrid and Gerald at the big Art show in the park have each prayed, “Now please just one more request…may the weather gods be kind.” It seems that Thursday’s rain might just wring all the wet weather out of the sky. For Friday through Sunday, the forecasts predict low chances for rain and temperatures in the low 20s and high teens. Perfect. Check it out for yourself here.
Road closures
Parliament Street from Wellesley to Gerrard and Carlton from Parliament to Ontario are closed to vehicle traffic from 6 am on Saturday to 11 pm on Sunday. A word of warning - any vehicles parked on these streets after the Saturday morning closure will be towed away. There will be temporary two-way traffic during these times on Prospect, Rose, Aberdeen, Winchester, Berkeley and Ontario. Click on the map to enlarge it.
The organizers have a last word
The tents are going up for the art show (Winchester and Sumach). Jen Pritchard, Ingrid Knutson, Kate Taylor, Angela Lane, Michelle Organ and Michelle Ross are marking the spaces for the tents. The organizers, Ingrid and Gerald, have a few thoughts to share. “A big group hug from Cabbagetown Art and Craft Show to all our neighbours who have taken lawn signs and members who have stuffed envelopes and spread the word and signed up to volunteer starting this Friday afternoon.”

Eclectisaurus yard sale
On Saturday September 6, Leslie is bringing Eclectisaurus into Cabbagetown. Her yard sale will include vintage and antique items. Drop by 143 Winchester.
Bling fundraiser
Maggie de Bruyne is again organizing a bling sale on Saturday September 6 during the Festival at 286 Carlton Street from 9 am to 3 pm. It’s a fundraiser in support of The Children’s Book Bank and the Cabbagetown Youth Centre. It’ll feature an eclectic array of jewelry including costume, sterling, gold and semi precious gems. Lots of preowned items, some vintage pieces and newly crafted work from local artisans. Last year’s sale was a success and she’s sure that this year will be even better.
Cabbagetown community garage sale
This big sale is happening on Saturday September 6 from 6 am to 4 pm at 89 Winchester. All proceeds go to Dixon Hall, a non-profit serving vulnerable communities in Downtown East Toronto. Last year, over $2,000 was raised. You can donate your old items and then stop and shop for new treasures. You’ll find cookbooks, kitchen gear, furniture, décor, clothing, toys, trinkets & collectibles.
Cabbagetown Short Film Festival
Congrats to Gina Dineen and her team for organizing this year’s Festival. Gina reports that, “The gentleman in the photo is Cabbagetown resident, writer, director, actor, Pete Henderson, the recipient of the inaugural Smart Short Award … he submitted a treatment for Every Goddam Day and was awarded a development and production grant. The finished film was a huge hit at the screening.” By Wednesday afternoon, tickets for the live Gala were sold out. FESTIVAL EVENTS
Cabbagetown Art & Crafts Show
Friday September 5 to Sunday September 7. 160 artists are displaying their work at the big art and crafts show in Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach). Stroll through the park, shop for your favourites and enjoy music by Duncan Hopkins and snacks from the food vendors. There’s fine art, ceramics, metalwork, glass, woodworking, textiles and more. The show’s impressive website has pictures of the artists’ works, location of their booths and links to their personal websites.
Cutting the cabbage
The traditional cutting ceremony for the Festival takes place at Carlton and Parliament at 11 am on Saturday. Watch for the dignitaries and watch to see who does the big slice. Last year, Chris Moise, Kristyn Wong-Tam and Marci Ien did the chops.
Cabbagetown Festival on Parliament Street
It’s a family-friendly celebration along Parliament and Carlton on Saturday September 6 and Sunday September 7. Local restaurants will have outdoor patios that are perfect places to watch the passing crowd. There’ll be DJs, street performers, artisan stalls, craft beer and food specialties. Carlton Street becomes a kids zone. The Grand Opening cabbage cutting ceremony happens at 11 am on Saturday at the corner of Carlton and Parliament. The Closing Parade winds down Parliament Street from Gerrard to Wellesley at 6:20 pm on Sunday. Free.
Parliament Street highlights
Over forty performers will appear on six stages - Wellesley, Carlton, Spruce, Berkeley, Kids Zone and the Indigenous stage. The BIA has produced a handy guide to the Festival’s entertainment schedule and vendors.

The Kids Zone
This popular feature along Carlton Street includes a kids’ stage programmed with live music, magic acts and story time. There’ll be face painting, craft tables, stilt walkers, games, and rides for kids of all ages.
House party at Ontario
Akasha Art Projects (204D Carlton) is having a two-day house party at Carlton and Ontario during the Festival. From 3 to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday, there’s DJ YaYa and DJ Mad Martigan spinning Deep House and Techno sounds.
Blair’s Run
Blair’s Run is a 2km race and fundraiser for the Cabbagetown Youth Centre (2 Lancaster) and the Boys & Girls Club (101 Spruce). Donations have started to roll in. Three teams are already collecting impressive amounts - the Carlton Comets at $8.800, the BGCTK Facilities at $6,400 and the Wellesley Wanderers at $4,700. In total, over $38,900 has been raised so far. The big event happens next Sunday . The warm-ups start at 8 am and the race goes out at 9 am. Riverdale Farm Fall Festival
A fun excursion for your family in the Farm (Winchester and Sumach) during Festival weekend. There’s a corn roast on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 pm, and a pancake breakfast on Sunday from 9 to 11 am. On both days in the Francey Barn, there are farm demonstrations with goats at noon and sheep at 2 pm and line dancing at 11 am and 1 pm. All day on each day, there are children’s activities and face painting and spinning and weaving demonstrations in the Meeting House. Admission is free.
St James Town Festival
1 to 7 pm, Saturday September 6. A day full of live entertainment, a community marketplace with artisans and handmade crafts, raffles and prizes, play areas with games and interactive workshops, and delicious food. Evan Solomon’s office
Our member of Parliament, Evan Solomon is also a cabinet minister. His office at 430 Parliament was targeted by vandals who pasted posters on the window and sprayed red paint on the bricks beside the door. It was all cleaned off within a couple of days. Mr Solomon has responded, "We strongly condemn the illegal act of vandalism at my constituency office this weekend. Canadians have every right to protest peacefully, but vandalism and intimidation have no place in our democracy. “ The police have been informed.

Bill and John were strolling through the farmers’ market on Tuesday when we caught up to them. Congrats to them - they’ve just happily celebrated their 35th anniversary together. No wonder they’re lookin’ so good.

Movies at Stout
Weekly free movie nights at Stout Irish Pub (221 Carlton). The lineup features family movies - bring your kids. On Sunday September 7, the movies will pause for the Cabbagetown Festival. Moss Park picnic party
There’ll be delicious bites, drinks, music, activities for all ages, and community. The picnic will be on the lawn at 260 Queen Street East, between the shipping containers and the garden from noon on Saturday September 6.
Farmers’ markets
Every week the gardeners at Green Thumbs Growing Kids create beautiful floral bouquets and sell them at the Cabbagetown Farmers’ Market. Don’t miss their booth.
Cabbagetown Farmers Market - every Tuesday, 3 to 7 pm, in Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach). Local chefs are raving about this year’s field tomatoes and peaches.
Underpass Farmers Market - every Thursday from 4 to 7:30 pm in Underpass Park (29 Lower River Street). Vendors have apricots, peppers, celery, garlic, tomatoes, green and yellow beans, raspberries and peaches. For weekly updates, click here.
