LOCAL NEWS

Canada Day flags

Obviously, we felt that it was important to fly our flags.

Some homes were frivolous and fun.

People flew big flags and some made nifty arrangements with small ones.

A good friend returns

Rick Matthews is back at work in our community.  He's been recruited by Evan Solomon to take charge of his Toronto Centre constituency office.  He’s a great choice.  We saw him in action a few years ago as the executive director at the Cabbagetown BIA where he successfully innovated and attacked problems in very tough times.  Evan Solomon’s local office is relocating during the summer. In the meantime, the phone number is (416) 972-2030 or Ottawa at (613) 992-1377.  He can be reached by email at evan.solomon@parl.gc.ca.

Summer roaming performers

Once again, the Cabbagetown BIA is bringing musicians to Parliament, Gerrard and Carlton for you.  Vajayjay Abrams will stroll along from 5 to 8 pm on Saturday and Priyana will play from 3 to 6 pm on Sunday.

Marilyn’s clinic

Get your pet tuned up for summer.  Marilyn from Diggity Dog Grooming is back for her monthly nail trimming clinic at Pet Valu (240 Carlton).  9 am to 4 pm, Saturday July 5.  $15, cash please.  Call her for your appointment - (416) 920-6814.

Waterfront Toronto

Waterfront Toronto has a new video tour showing Ookwemin Minising, the former Villiers Island, on the waterfront at the mouth of the Don River.  Click here.

Sumach-Shuter Parkette

The petition opposing the renaming of this small parkette has now attracted more than 1100 signatures from residents who don’t like Councillor Chris Moise’s initiative to call it the Louis March Park.  There’s also a website with a rebuttal to the Councillor’s claims that he has consulted widely. Residents are circulating contact info for the Mayor and links to the Council’s vote on the matter. The official ceremony for the renaming is July 20.

Farmers’ markets

Cabbagetown Farmers Market  - Corktown's Roselle Desserts (362 King E) is the pop-up vendor this week.  Holly Clausius will be the featured entertainer.  Tuesday, 3 to 7 pm, in Riverdale Park West (Winchester and Sumach).

IN THE MEDIA

The Spirit Garden

The Spirit Garden in Nathan Phillips Square at City Hall is an important symbol of Toronto’s life with Indigenous people. Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre (439 Dundas E) is a partner in its development. Alex Bozikovich  has described the structures and their meanings in his Globe & Mail story. Parkette controversy

In late June, The Toronto Sun published a story by Justin Holmes about Chris Moise’s attempt to rename the parkette at Sumach and Shuter.  Kristyn Wong-Tam has jumped into the debate - a major move by an influential politician in this community.  Click here for the story.
