LOCAL NEWS
Corktown BIA
There’s an effort underway to revive the idea of a Queen Street BIA in Corktown. In a previous push, the project ended when eligible members at a founding meeting vetoed the budget. The BIA idea has long been a politician’s project - Pam McConnell, Glen Murray and now Chris Moise have wanted it. They pointed to the BIAs in Cabbagetown and in St Lawrence. Both are very successful models. Councillor Moise has created an attractive website that lists all the benefits. (Photo: As I Walk Toronto)
Corktown businesses aren’t so impressed. They published an advertisement on page 5 in The Bridge in opposition. Andre Berman, the publisher of The Bridge, wrote a comment in June that summarizes this debate neatly.
Pulling the plug
When Waterfront Toronto was building the new river valley in the Port Lands, they used “plugs” to keep water from the Don River and the lake away while construction was going on. In July, the west plug was removed so that water from the lake could fill the new river. Now, the north plug is being removed and water will now flow from the Don into the new river. There’s a YouTube video describing the plugs.
Blessing of the Animals
Last weekend, people brought their animals to St James Cemetery (635 Parliament) where Reverend Stephen Fields, a priest at St James Cathedral, offered blessings for each of them. It’s held in honour of St Francis of Assisi. This was the first ceremony at the cemetery - it’ll be an annual event in the future. Jane brought along Sophie for her blessing. (Photo: Brian Gerrior)
Looking’ good
Two-time Olympic medalist Sydney Payne is back in Cabbagetown and she visited Jet Fuel (519 Parliament). John Englar was clearly delighted.
Pots and pans
Lindsay is looking for old pots and pans, metal muffin tins, metal bowls, buckets and shovels for the kids at her school. They'll be used in the outdoor education programs. If you have some to spare, send her an email - lindsaynmatheson@gmail.com
Cabbagetown South community news

IN THE MEDIA
Life expectancy
Staff at The Local along with researchers from St Michael’s Hospital looked at the correlation between census data on income and death rates. It’s an alarming study. They found that neighbourhoods like St James Town had lower life expectancy levels than the wealthy areas north on Yonge Street. Moss Park ranked the lowest levels. Click here to read the story.
Life for homeless people
Dave LeBlanc, the Globe & Mail’s architourist, took a walk through Regent Park to talk to people living there in social housing and to learn more about life for homeless people. Click here to read his report.
