CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD
REVIEW
A PERSONAL VIEW
Really, Chris
In his July 31 community Newsletter, Councillor Chris Moise bemoans what he considers to be Ottawa’s negligence. He writes, “… it is disheartening to hear Deputy Prime Minister Freeland has abandoned Toronto and has downloaded the remaining costs of supporting refugees onto the City.” He’s responding to Ms Freeland who had the nerve to remind City officials of the billions of dollars that Ottawa has already sent our way in recent years. What seems particularly ill-considered in Mr Moise’s smack - his newsletter is also full of admonitions that Ottawa must do something about every problem facing Toronto.
LOCAL NEWS
Condo at 505 - 509 Parliament
Gilles Huot has written an update on the application for this project. He reports that the City planner has visited the site twice and is well informed on Cabbagetown issues about the project. The developer will also be holding a virtual meeting with the residents from Broadcast Lane this week. City planners have already sent the developer comments about the application. This gives him an opportunity to review his application and possibly amend it. The City Plan also includes provisions for inclusionary zoning which require that 10% of the building be devoted to affordable housing. However, the policy has not yet received provincial approval and isn’t in force on this project.
Jazz Shukla
Well done, Jazz. At the Canadian National Track & Field event, she powered her way to her third place victory in the women’s senior 800 metres in a time of 2:03.94. Despite the injury that she was suffering during the race. (Photo: Kevin Morris)
CJ Campbell
Cabbagetown is well represented at the Women’s Soccer World Cup. Dr C J Campbell is a spots medicine doctor and she’s there as a member of the doping control team at Dunedin in New Zealand. She’s traveled for 13 years in the past with Canada' s national women's soccer team. She’s currently in Dunedin, NZ working for FIFA at her 17th world cup event. When she returns, we’ll get an update on her work and her reactions to the tournament.
Reactions to the bike lanes
After posting comments critical of the bike lane project last week from local resident Rick Walker, I received several notes supporting it. Bronwyn Roe said, “…as someone that has recently started getting around the city by bike, I will really appreciate the new contra-flow bike lanes on Sackville, Sumach and Winchester as they will make it safer and more efficient for me to navigate the neighbourhood when I'm riding a bike.” Susan Corrigan wrote, “The new contraflow bike lanes and other bike markings in our neighbourhood will be a win-win-win for pedestrians, cyclists, and car drivers. This type of project is relatively inexpensive, helps encourage cycling, and can link up other types of bike routes and lanes.” Hagit Fry sent two responses, "I was at the public meeting and, from what I could see, people objected to the car traffic changes (which they didn’t understand and the city is not implementing) and not to the bike lanes as such.” And she also said, “And, if Rick Walker is worried about tax dollars, how about wasting millions on rebuilding the Gardiner? Way more than what the city has ever spent on bike lanes.” Finally, Keith Nunn commented, “Paint is cheap and these contra-flow lanes make it clear to motorists and cyclists that such activities are permitted. Because there is as yet no good cycle connection at Gerrard, these lanes are indeed somewhat isolated and may seem superfluous, however, as the network expands these are an important part of the whole network. This is a good choice, especially as I suspect Rick would lose his mind if someone proposed adding protected bike lanes to Parliament. That is the only real alternative to the current plan.”
