LOCAL NEWS
Metrolinx in the Don Valley
On March 1, Metrolinx abandoned its plans to create a rail yard in the Don Valley just north of the Bloor viaduct. This facility was undoubtedly going to create an industrial scar in the valley. The news has been welcomed by community activists and conservationists. Metrolinx will locate the yard at Leslie and York Mills in an area that it describes as a “light industrial” neighbourhood. While this new yard is being constructed, Metrolinx will use the Rosedale siding for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. This siding sits between Bayview and the Don Valley. Thornton and Lucie Blackburn
Historica Canada has created a marvellous video, Breaking Chains, about the Blackburns. They were escaped slaves who arrived in Toronto in 1834. They eventually settled in a small house where Inglenook Community High School (19 Sackville) now stands. They started their own business, contributed to efforts to help other escaped slaves and became prosperous community leaders. George Brown College named its conference centre at Front and Cherry Streets in their honour. In 1999, the federal government named them Persons of Historic Significance. They’re buried in section E, lot 100 in the Necropolis. To watch the video, click here.
Anniversary Park
The City of Toronto has announced plans to upgrade Anniversary Park. There are no details yet beyond a tentative schedule. Community consultations will take place over the Spring. By the Fall, a detailed design will be in place. Construction will start in the Spring 2024 and be completed by the Fall 2024.
The BIA’s plans for the park
For years, the BIA has advocated for a completely new layout for the park. It has a plan to use the park for community entertainment. There's also a plan to shut the northern road and expand the park into the main sidewalk. These ideas have been pursued in the draft of its new streetscape plan. The City’s involvement is crucial if a major facelift is going to happen.
Sydney Payne in Mississauga
Last weekend, the World Indoor Rowing Championships were held in Mississauga. It was a hybrid event with some athletes competing in person and others competing online. Sydney rowed in the Women’s 23-39 age group (2000 meters) on a rowing machine called an ergometer. Her time at 6 minutes, 52.6 seconds earned her the bronze medal. Her Canadian colleague Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski came in second at 6.43.2. The winner, Olena Buryak, is a formidable veteran who raced from Ukraine and came in at 6:39.9.
