Food drive
Carolling for Cans took place on Sunday December 4 in the neighbourhood between Amelia, Sumach, Carlton and Metcalfe and the streets in-between. It’s a food drive to benefit the food bank at Saint Luke’s. This year, once again, people left their parcels on their porches for a drive-by event since the carollers couldn’t go door-to-door. Over 75 homes contributed and their gifts filled an SUV. Congrats to Christina Jackson and her team for another welcome success.

Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum Historical Tidbit
By Sally Gibson. Internationally celebrated author, naturalist and artist, Ernest Thompson Seton spent part of his childhood roaming the Don Valley. In the 1870s, he lived in several parts of Toronto and eventually resided briefly at 86 Howard Street. In February 1893, crowds began waiting outside the Seton household to look at Seton’s great-but-gruesome painting, The Wolves’ Triumph. This painting had both dramatic content and dramatic reception in Paris where Seton painted it and in Toronto where Seton displayed it. Based on a real story of a wolf hunter in the Pyrenees being hunted down and killed by a pack of wolves, Seton took the side of the wolves. Art critics and journalists tended to side with the dead hunter. The painting, however, was so good that it was accepted into the Paris Salon of 1891 and was a centrepiece at Canada’s exhibit at the 1893 Chicago Fair. Seaton’s early life in Toronto’s Don Valley and other “wild” areas contributed to his prolific animal stories and natural history images.
