CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD REVIEW
FEATURED LOCAL ARTIST
Martha Patricia House
Martha received her Masters Degree in English Literature at McMaster University and then earned a degree in Fashion Retail and Design. She published a book about fashion and design that was sold in both Canada and the USA. She studied art extensively in Italy and the USA, attending workshops and getting technical training with some of the best known artists in International contemporary art. She began painting in 2013 in her Cabbagetown studio and became a full time painter in 2016. Since then, her work has been featured in four solo shows and sold to collectors around the world. In 2019, she did a large six-painting installation for a downtown loft development.
Appointments to view her work at her studio are welcome. Her artwork can be found at Artifacts Lifestyle in Port Carling and her work will also be carried at Artifacts new location in Oakville. Martha is on instagram and she can be reached by DM on that account or by email.
Purple Drip Heart
"Part of my Heart Series, this Heart is not quite so literal. It's not completely shaped at the bottom. The drips draw the viewers eyes down, to a future, and allow the viewer to see possibilities within this Heart that are known only to them..”
ELECTION DAY, MONDAY SEPTEMBER 20
Fewer voting locations
Toronto Centre will have only 15 locations where its 81,000 eligible voters can cast their ballots. This is reduced from 91 locations used in 2019. Obviously, this means that voters will have to travel longer distances to get to their assigned spot. It also means that there will be crowds at each location. Election officials will be ready to handle these crowds with contact tracing, social distancing and masks. Once inside, voters will be in larger rooms and will be lined up at separate tables. Voting details
Election day is Monday September 20, 9:30 am to 9:30 pm. Your personal voter information card has been mailed and it should have arrived. It confirms that you’re registered on the voters’ list and it tells you when and where you can vote. Click here if you want to check whether you’re on the list.

Days of Vaxation
Pop-up clinics will be operated across the city by the City of Toronto. They’re aimed at people who have difficulty or reluctance getting a vaccine. The Wellesley Community Centre (495 Sherbourne) will host a clinic from 9:30 am to 4 pm on Friday September 17 and Saturday September 18 and again on Friday September 24 and Saturday September 25. A late-night pop-up from 8 pm to 1 am will happen on the northwest corner of Parliament and Wellesley on Friday September 17. Walk-ins welcome - Pfizer and Moderna available at both clinics.
Cabbagetown Art & Crafts
The big art show in Riverdale Park (Winchester and Sumach) went off successfully on Saturday and Sunday. Even the predicted rain held off until the evening when the show was over. Congrats to everyone who made it happen and thanks to everyone who visited and made it a success.
Blair’s Run
Brenda reports that 13 teams have checked in so far. The Alley Cats - last year’s winners - took advantage of ActiveTO closures on Bayview to have a fun event. So far, the Run has raised $27,130 for the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Club on behalf of the Cabbagetown Youth Centre.
Construction at Castle Frank subway station
In late September, the TTC will begin construction on two elevators to service the Castle Frank station. They’ll be located on each side of the front doors and descend to the east and west platforms. Exterior disruptions will last about a year and the entire job will be finished by 2024. Cars coming up from Bayview and the DVP will encounter a narrower exit onto Bloor Street. Westbound Bloor traffic will lose a lane. The bike lane will be moved over and the north sidewalk will be closed.
Welcome William and Sutherland
Two Toronto Police horses (and their riders) dropped in to the courtyard at Wellesley Cottages on Tuesday afternoon. Kids, parents and other neighbours really enjoyed their visit. 12-year old William (in the front) is the power guy and 15-year old Sutherland is the speedster. They’re magnificent. Daycare at Amelia and Sackville
Councillor Kristyn Wong Tam is opposed to the daycare centre project. Check out this Toronto Star article about her latest manoeuvres at City Hall.
Polling stations in Toronto Centre
CBC News reported on the cutbacks in polling locations in Toronto Centre and other ridings across the city. It gives plenty of detail about the reasons and the expected impact. (Photo: Peter Power, Canadian Press)
School repairs
