REVIEW
FEATURED LOCAL ARTISTS
Every week, a new image in the right hand column highlights the work of a local artist.
Throughout April, Bev Jenkins will be featured.
She focuses on nature and its strengths of light, vivid colour and texture. Her thickly applied oils are sculpted in a neo-impressionist style.
LOCAL NEWS
COVID-19 contact info
Toronto has a useful website with the latest information, resources and facts.
Contact Public Health at the City of Toronto by telephone (416-338-7600) and email. PublicHealth@toronto.ca

COVID-19 infection
An employee at our local Shoppers Drug Mart (467 Parliament) has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. On Monday April 6, the company sent out an email informing customers. The employee was last in the store on Saturday April 4.
When Shoppers learned about it, the store was immediately closed and deep-cleaned. Local public health authorities began investigating the employee’s shifts and contacts. Any other employees who were potentially exposed were advised to stay home and self-isolate. Finally, Shoppers is also informing customers who may have had contact with the employee by email.
Thanks to those helping us
Heather has written to suggest that we owe a big “thanks” to the people in our stores who are there to serve us daily. Despite the risks that they face, they’re making sure that we have the food, gasoline, pharmaceuticals, baked goods and more that we need on a daily basis. Very often, we think of the police, fire and emergency services who help us and we overlook these folks.
Leaf collections
The official pick-up date for our leaf collections will be next Wednesday, April 15. The statement from the City of Toronto seemed confusing and many residents thought it would happen on April 8. Not so. Please also note that your garden waste must be packed in brown leaf bags. The workers will not empty out other containers.
How to wash your hands
Mark at St James Town Steak & Chops (516 Parliament) has posted on Facebook about handwashing. It’s a great video - don’t miss it.
Thanks to the Children’s Book Bank
The Book Bank (350 Berkeley) supplies free books to children from families in need. During the COVID crisis, the storefront is closed but the Book Bank’s distributions continue. The staff have issued a press release that describes their current efforts:
“Building on existing partnerships with community organizations throughout the city, the charity’s Outreach Coordinator is packing up sanitized books, organized by age, into new plastic bags. The books are being delivered to some of Toronto’s food banks and other social service agencies to distribute. Families receive the bags of age-appropriate books when they pick up food or access health or educational services…. Close to 1,000 books have found their way to children since our closure on March 14.”
The Book Bank’s partners include Building Roots—a food security agency—located in Moss Park, The Stop, CRC @ 40 Oaks Street, St. Michael's health clinics, some schools from the TDSB, Hotel Radisson, Welcoming Communities Program in Scarborough and the Toronto Plaza Hotel at Jane and Finch.
650 Parliament
Tenants are still returning to 650 Parliament in staged amounts, two floors at a time starting from the top floors. The elevator system can only accommodate a limited number of movers each day. According to one mover on Wednesday, they are now working on the 12th floor.
Daniels Corporation art contest
Daniels is planning to add a logo to employee name plates in its headquarters. Residents of Regent Park are invited to submit artwork for consideration. It should be designed to fit 8.5” and 2”. The winner will receive a $500 honorarium. Submissions are due before Friday April 24. For details contact Fatima Saya at fsaya@danielscorp.com
Dog walking
Both the City of Toronto and the provincial government have closed off-leash dog walking facilities in the city’s parks. As the photo shows, bylaw officers wearing the green vests are now checking park visitors to make sure that these rules are followed.
This ban includes the playing fields at Riverdale Park West and Corktown Common. Please also avoid any groups who may be tempted to get together for a regular chat. We’re reminded to keep a social distance when we meet other people.
On-leash dog walking is permissible on sidewalks, in parks and elsewhere as part of our daily routines.

BUSINESS NEWS
Congrats Spruce
Kim at Spruce (455 Parliament) has boarded up her windows as a precaution to protect her store during the COVID closures. She then approached Siobhan Waldock to paint a mural using leftover supplies from the store. Here’s her comment on this work -
“The artist who did the work for me is Siobhan Waldock - she is a talented young artist who lives in Riverdale and many people will remember her from her time at The House on Parliament! She made this lovely piece for me based on an image I sent her for inspiration and a list of old paint colours I had! She's so talented to create something like this out of literally leftover paint. I hope it brings a little brightness to people when they see it”.
Kim has also been updating her website. She’s also now offering free porch-drop delivery (lobby delivery in condos) in Toronto on Mondays and Thursdays. Check out her inventory and her order system online.
