LOCAL NEWS
Another amazing night
It’s great when kids and parents all dress up and go Trick or Treating together.

Our local election statistics
Mayor John Tory carried Ward 13 - he collected 16,223 votes, 51.1% of the votes cast. Jennifer Keesmatt got 11,565 votes, 36.5%. Mr Tory won every poll in Don Vale, St James Town, Winchester Park, Cabbagetown South, Regent Park and Corktown. Ms Keesmatt won two polls out of seven in the new condos in the Canary District. There were 31,710 votes for the mayoral candidates in total.
31,249 votes were cast in the councillor’s race. Kristyn Wong Tam earned 15,706 (50.2%), George Smitherman got 4,734 (15.1%) and Lucy Troisi collected 2,698 (8.6%). Ms Wong Tam carried each neighbourhood in our area.
The City of Toronto has published a poll-by-poll map and a poll-by-poll statistical summary of the voting patterns.
Request for Proposals for Regent Park
Toronto Community Housing has reopened the revitalization process in Regent Park and it has issued a request for proposals for the completion of stages 4 and 5. This move has sparked considerable community concern. The Daniels Corporation is, of course, welcome to bid but it will face competition from other developers who want to complete the project.
Regent Park residents are invited to a community meeting hosted by the Regent Park Neighbourhood Association to discuss the criteria that residents would like to see for evaluating developers.
6 to 8 pm, Thursday Nov 1, 180 Sackville St, main floor Community Room
Blair’s Run
The proceeds earned in Blair’s Run during the Cabbagetown Festival were donated to the Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group. Almost $23,000 has been collected to date and, when all the cheques are received, organizers hope that total will reach $25,000. It’ll be matched by Burnbrae Farms, one of Canada’s leading egg producers, bringing the donation to $50,000.
The Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group hosted a very pleasant reception at the Farm on Monday night to thank the race team for their gift. David Doze, chair of the Stewardship Group, spoke warmly about its importance and the value of the connection between the Farm and local residents.
Congrats WE Global Learning Centre
Heritage Toronto has awarded one of two 2018 Architectural Conservation & Craftsmanship Awards to the WE Global Learning Centre (339 Queen E). It’s home to ME To WE offices and a learning centre for students from around the world. Before the building’s restoration, it housed the landmark Marty Millionaire store. Click here to see a CTV clip about its new features.
Lookin’ good
Victoria travelled to BC’s Sunshine Coast recently and sent back this gorgeous picture. She’s obviously enjoying her visit - almost as much as she enjoys Aberdeen Ave.
Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum Historical Tidbit
by Sally Gibson
Image: Proposed New General Hospital, 1854 Toronto Public Library
On October 1 1856, the first twelve patients moved into their grand new quarters in the Toronto General Hospital, designed by William Hay and located east of Parliament Street on the “Don and Danforth plank road” (now Gerrard Street, between Sackville and Sumach).
Controversy had surrounded the choice of this site. Nay-sayers believed it was an unhealthy, ague-plague part of town near the Don River marshlands. Nevertheless, Hay’s Second Empire hospital was built. It acted as a magnet for other medical institutions like the Trinity Medical College on Spruce Street. It treated patients – both civilian and military – until the opening of a new, more central hospital on College Street near University Avenue in 1913 and the end of the Great War in 1918.

In the 1880s, some choir members participated in HMS Pinafore and were fired for behaviour unbecoming. In that same period, 67% of the juvenile delinquents before the courts declared they were Methodists. Metropolitan with its social justice orientation was responsible for the creation of several social agencies, such as the Fred Victor Centre, and it greatly benefited from the congregation support of the Ryersons, and the Masseys.
