Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum - historic tidbit

Pitcher Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum
Local employment was a feature of early life in Cabbagetown. The Kemp Manufacturing Company, later the Sheet Metal Products and then General Wares Company was one of our major employers. From the 1880s through the First and then the Second World War, its factory occupied the site south of Gerrard, east of River Street to the Don River.  It manufactured a great variety of products from housewares to military helmets.
This 1894 photograph shows the vast Enameling Room where pitchers like the one owned by the Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum were turned out by workers from many ethnic groups including the working-class Anglo-Irish and black communities in the 1890s and the Macedonian community in the early 20th century.
For more Cabbagetown history, photos and videos visit the CRPM Facebook page. The Museum at Riverdale Farm’s Simpson House is open on week-ends: Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm.

Bea Ziegert
Longtime Cabbagetown resident Bea Ziegert has died.  She was an enthusiastic neighbour and she loved her Cabbagetown home. She travelled and taught abroad extensively at Cornell in the USA and in the south Pacific.
Bea bought her Laurier Street home in 1979. She eventually learned that its remarkable interior had been designed by Sonja and Michael Stewart. She’s the daughter of Viljo Revell who designed Toronto’s landmark city hall.  Bea preserved their work and when she wanted to update the interior, she tracked down Mr Stewart.  Dave Leblanc, the Globe & Mail’s architecture writer, did a story about her house in 2006.  Click here to read it.
When she worried that she couldn’t continue to live alone, Bea sold her house.  She died on Sunday October 23 from the effects of a stroke.  There will be a memorial service for her at First Unitarian Church (175 St Clair) on Friday November 18 at 11am.

Lookin’ good
Michael Hepburn is a well-known landscape contractor whose work can been seen in every corner of our neighbourhood - he does a terrific job.   On Monday, he was busy admiring the Hallowe’en artwork in an Amelia Street garden.
