Follow-up on the fire at 11 Aberdeen
Photo: Tony Smyth, CBC
No news.  Neighbours report that there’s action underway to make sure that the building site is safe and enclosed. TCHC confirms that these immediate repairs are being made and that residents in the building have been relocated.
Two questions really affect the neighbourhood – details about the fire’s causes and some indication that the building will be restored expeditiously.  At the moment, there`s no information about either.  There’s also been no answer about plans for the house at 38 Prospect Street that TCHC owns - it caught fire over eight years ago and the building has been empty and boarded up ever since.

Pacamambo at The Citadel
Ken Gass has resurfaced with his Canadian Rep Theatre company.  His first play – Wajdi Mouawad’s Pacamambo - will be performed at The Citadel (304 Parliament) from January 28 to February 2.  For tickets and more information, visit the company’s website.  Richard Ouzounian has written an article in The Toronto Star about Gass, the theatre company and its 2014 program.

Cooking classes at Merryberry
There’s an extra touch at Merryberry – cooking classes where you can learn how to prepare the recipes used in Cyril’s monthly special meals (check out the next story for details - in January, the recipes include an intriguing mix of coconut milk and cayenne peppers.)  These will be small informal group sessions and reservations are a must (647-348-0411).  They’ll be a mix of hands-on experience and demonstrations. The first class is on Tuesday January 21 at 6 pm.  Classes will run about two hours.  $45/person.

Merryberry’s new menu
Merryberry’s January menu highlights coconut milk and cayenne peppers.  Cyril feels that these are just the right exotic flavours to beat off those chilly winter blues
The appetizer is Asian succotash with tiger shrimps on a bed of corn, red pepper, scallion and zucchini, cooked in coconut milk with a dash of cayenne.  The entrée is a Trinidadian-inspired chicken stewed in spiced coconut milk, shredded over a bowl of warm coconut quinoa with cranberries, pine nuts and orange zest.  For dessert, slices of mango are covered with a thick and sweet coconut milk sauce and sprinkled with cayenne.
Reservations at 647-348-0411. Winter hours – 11 am to 8 pm, Wednesday to Saturday. 11 am to 4 pm, Sunday to Tuesday.  559 Parliament.

On February 13, 14 and 15, Extended F’Amelia (8 Amelia) will be transformed into a very romantic Oyster Bar.  In the restaurant, F’Amelia (12 Amelia) will feature a prix-fixe special.  Because it’s the Valentine weekend, both F’Amelia and Extended F’Amelia will be busy and so they’re taking reservations.   (416-323-0666).

Congrats to the Uke club
Every Wednesday night, the Corktown Ukelele Jam meets at the Dominion on Queen (500 Queen E).  The group’s fifth birthday happened on January 14 and there was a big theme night to celebrate. On the first night, a blizzard scared the organizers but a couple of dozen devotees showed up.  Now, 1641 players are on the active list.  Find out about CUJam’s programs here. Check out the Dominion on Queen here.

Congrats to Erin and Stout
Erin has announced Stout’s third birthday on Wednesday January 22.  She’s holding a party to celebrate – complete with hors d’oeuvres, birthday treats, a wing-eating contest and bingo.  For reservations, email her at . Stout has been a dynamic addition to the neighbourhood.  Our thanks to Erin for all her work and her happy attitude along the way.  Stout Irish Pub, 221 Carlton.

Lots of stuff happening at Carlton and Ontario

Over the past few months, we’ve all been enjoying The Scullery’s (200 Carlton) beautiful room and fine baking.  The butter tarts are really good!  You can see daily menus on its website. News, photos and updates are available on Facebook.

Across the street, Fare Game has closed and a new project is now underway.  Hi Irv (195 Carlton) is scheduled for a March 1 opening.  It’s going to be a gastro pub with pub classics and house specialties on the menu and good wine, unique cocktails and craft beers on tap.  There's a website and a Facebook page.

Next door, Zakkushi (193 Carlton) is getting lots of attention. Chris Nuttall-Smith wrote a very positive review in the Globe & Mail.

The new owners at the old Cafune site (194A Carlton) are changing the room’s interior.  No word yet about their plans for the restaurant.

A beautiful lighting fixture from Eclectisaurus
This is a dramatic Italian chandelier by Venini.  It has an elaborate frame featuring three squared tiers with each side being swagged to create a complex pattern of gleaming crystal.  Nine standard light bulbs make a bright source of central lighting.  Check Electisaurus’ website for more info.  249 Gerrard E.
